Subject: OEMar-584 Patent Report
I agree with the statements in your communication of November 22, 1944 about the patent report for OEMsr-584.
It is my understanding that Dr. Arnold O. Beckman had an OSRD contract himself, under which developmental work on the oxygen meter was done. He did not work on a subcontract under OEMsr-58, and accordingly it is not necessary for us to make a patent report about inventions made by Dr. Beckman.
I judge that the patent report for OEMsr-584 would report no new invention except possibly that of the Flow Regulator on Page 42. Will you please discuss this with Mr. David Shoemaker, and decide whether or not this constitutes an invention, and should be reported.

Dearest Mom
Today I finally mailed Lindy's present and a couple of ones for Pete and Crellie. I hope
everything arrives safely.
We've been having some cold weather recently. Everyone's been complaining. And the
wind blows sand and dirt everywhere.
I'm wondering what to do to celebrate Christmas we get two days at least. Not much
unless I get some money.
Greece has been made a mess of hasn't it? An example of Britain's foreign policy falling
through. But it looks as if the U.S. isn't handling her responsibilities any too well either. I think
the chances are in favor of there being a third war soon after this one.
I have to rush off to chow now. Give my regards to everyone.
All my love,
Linus

Dear Eddie:
I am very glad that you shall be in Pasadena for eight or nine days, and I am pleased to give you permission to use the facilities of the Gates and Crellin Laboratories. Could you come to Christmas dinner at our house, in the early afternoon of Christmas day? Dr. Sturdivant will be there—I don't know who the other guests may be.
I am very sorry to learn that Calvin and Mrs. Calvin
have had such bad luck with the Rh factor. We should, of course,
be very glad to help him in any way that we can. Would you tell
him that Levine will be here on January 16. I think that it would
be well worth while for Calvin to talk with him.
We shall look forward to seeing you.

[Dec. 17, 1944 from postmark]
Dearest Mom
I'm sending you back the letters you sent me; I enjoyed them very much.
I sent off finally those pictures you sent me. I decided that it wasn't worthwhile giving
them to Betty, so I'll send the originals and the new negatives to you.
I'm finishing my third week only two more to go and then something relatively new.
We have a choice of several advanced courses. I can't decide which I would prefer. I can
choose ones in which I would learn something that might be useful after the war, and then there
are ones in which there is a possibility of flying. Being a mechanic, by the way, I don't fly as
part of my job, unless for testing equipment. But overseas anything can happen, and operating
these sets isn't difficult.
Monday I'm going to indulge in Christmas shopping in Palm Beach. I hope I'm
successful.
All my love to you,
Linus

Saturday midnight [1944]
Dearest Mom
Finally out of basic radar and into a very pleasing advanced course. I was given Night
Fighter very interesting and the best thing is that it's six weeks long and, with perhaps some
weeks of KP thrown in, I go to Southern California March Field in Fresno for further training.
Home every weekend sounds good! Almost too good. So I'll be home probably in early
February. There's always the chance that the army will interfere so keep some doubts in your
mind.
I received your package in good shape. I'll render effusive thanks after Christmas when
I'm supposed to open it. I'm counting on a substantial pecuniary allowance large party
planned. I'm got to enjoy this Christmas as much as possible makes the circumstances.
Ask Dad if he remembers Stanley Juleen freshman in '43-44. Juleen has been
wandering around the section praising Dad to the stars my reputation has increased
tremendously. "Gee I didn't know your dad was a genius" etc. I feel a particular combination
of embarrassment and pride.
Best of good wished to the whole family I know you'll have a very merry Christmas.
You always also. My love to Crelly, Lindy, Pete, and to you and Dad. Say hello to your
Christmas guests for me.
And mom I wish you the happiest birthday possible. My especial love goes to you I
wish I might give it in person. This is a poor substitute but I'll be thinking of you on the 24th.
Tomorrow I move to section N, some B.M.C. Early Shift, 6AM to noon. Tomorrow
afternoon and night the Messiah. Some day.
Happy Birthday, Mom!
Linus
- Letter from Willard S. Breon, Regional Chemist of the Office of Censorship, to Dr. George G. Wright, Crellin Laboratory at CIT. Provides him with results from the study of the screeds which we submitted with Wright's 12 19th letter. Notes that the liquid iodine reagent gave results comparable to that of the dye reagent in terms of detection. Discusses the usefulness of the dye reagent and says that the possibility of writing with protein materials in solid form should be considered. LP Safe: Drawer 3, Folder 3.016

December 26 [1944]
Dear Pete
So you noticed, eh? It finally happened on the 16th of Dec.
Your turrets were undoubtedly slowed down. I've seen movies in which they whip
around with some speed.
Telephone circuits are right in my line. One would be fun to make. The circuit is
simple, but you do need money for the mike and phones.
On Christmas I rode a tandem bicycle to Palm Beach and went swimming with some
beautiful girls. It was a lot of fun.
See you later,
Linus.

- Letter from George G. Wright to Dr. Willard S. Breon, The Office of Censorship. Thanks Breon for his December 21st and 23rd letters, and for the results of his comparisons of different methods. Notes that Mr. Eberhardt, Mr. Lanni, and he have their reservations for the trip and plan to arrive on January 9th. Suggests that communications from him are sent in plain, rather than official, envelopes in order to maintain the security of their project. Dear Dr. Johnson:
It will be satisfactory to us for you to come to the Institute next month, to begin your work. I myself shall be in the East from about January 20 to February 2nd, but Dr. George Wright can help you to get started, in case that you arrive while I am away.
I shall look forward to seeing you. I am sorry to learn from your letter that one of your children has been seriously ill.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Dr. Richards:
The work on penicillin, which we have not prosecuted very intensively because of other activities, has so far not provided any very promising results. I inclose [sic] a report by Professor Dan H. Campbell on the work which has been carried out.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling

REPORT FOR RICHARDS
The first study of penicillin was an attempt to combine it with glyoxal0treated serum albumin. No combination was obtained. The glyoxal had no effect on the activity of the penicillin.
Since serum proteins tend to associate of polymerize under the influence of denaturing agents, experiments were carried out to determine whether penicillin would be incorporated into such protein complexes. The denaturing agents and conditions studied were urea, moderately high temperatures, and alkaline pHs. It was found that these denaturing agents and conditions have little effect on penicillin activity in the absence of protein, but that the apparent activity is rapidly lost when human serum albumin is added. Studies are still in progress to determine if this is an actual destruction of penicillin, or is due to association of the penicillin molecules with the relatively large non-diffusible albumin molecules. This is being determined by studies on the amount of penicillin excreted from injected rabbits. Results obtained so far are not conclusive, but indicate that serum albumin actually inactivates the penicillin.
