Dear Professor Lamb:
In the manuscript which accompanies this letter, Professor Zechmeister and I and our collaborators have indicated Roman type for the words cis and trans when not used as prefixes in chemical names. It seems to me that this simplification is a desirable one, since these words can, I think, now be taken into the English language. I am writing now to ask if you are not willing to permit us this usage; and further to inquire as to whether it may not, in your opinion, be well to consider the possibility of using these prefixes in chemical names without italicizing them.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling
