Chemistry Department
University of Wisconsin
Madison, Wisconsin
Dear Dr. Williams:
Since returning to Pasadena I have discussed with Dr. Koepfli and Dr. Campbell the possibility of your making a visit to Pasadena, for consultation with us about our work on blood substitutes. They are very much interested in this possibility, and I accordingly urge that you make this visit to Pasadena, if you find it possible. I shall be here until about the 5th or 10th of March, and any time between now and then would be satisfactory.
With best wishes, I am
Sincerely yours,

Dr. Henry M. Tsuchiya
University of Minnesota
The Medical School
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Dear Dr. Tsuchiya:
I am sending separately our reprints on the formation of antibodies. I am sorry that reprints of my 1940 paper are not available.
The answer to the question you ask in you letter is the following. The first dialysis of our material against sodium chloride removes the free dye, present in solution. The dialysis against haptene solution removes the dye combine with antibody, the haptene replacing the dye. The final dialysis then removes the haptene.
Very truly yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Mr. Johnson:
I am sorry to have been out of my laboratory at the time
of your visit in Pasadena, for I should have liked to talk with you.
I am kept very busy now with war work, in addition to my teaching and my research program in the field of immunochemistry, which I am continuing because of its possible practical value.
I hope that I shall get a chance to stop off in Ithaca and see the Telluride boys one of these days. I have seen Klepz and his wife several times, and have received a number of letters from Dean Kimoton, who is now at the University of Kansas City.

- Letter from John E. Burchard to LP, RE: Professor Robertson showed Burchard LP's letter and Burchard is sure that some people at the NRDC would be very glad to talk to LP. Dr. Bleakney and Dr. Curtis would like to see LP and Robertson would like to sit in. They can plan to be at Princeton on March 12. - Letter from L. H. Adams to LP, RE: Adams describes to LP several difficulties that he foresees in the development of LP's suggested gun projectile with a rocket feature. There might not be enough space in the cartridge case to add the rocket propellant. Adams is also concerned with the placement of the rotating band and the effect of initial projectile yaw on guns which have already been fired using current ammunition. If these difficulties can be worked out, the projectile could be tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground. However, the conditions for projectile recovery at Aberdeen are not satisfactory, so Adams suggests that testing be done at a range now being constructed near Springfield, Vermont. P.S. Dr. Grieg informed Adams that some work along these lines is being done in England. Has LP had access to any of their information? [Filed under LP Personal Safe, Drawer #3, Folder #3.032]

Dr. Frank Blair Hanson
The Rockefeller Foundation
49 West 49th Street
New York, New York
Dear Dr. Hanson:
I send herewith a set of photographs of men, apparatus, and the laboratories connected with work done under the Rockefeller Grant for Bio-Organic Chemistry and Immunochemistry at the California Institute of Technology. I am not too well satisfied with these photographs; we hired a professional photographer to make them, but I am afraid that he is not first-rate.
Descriptions of the photographs are given on the following page and are also pasted on the backs of the photographs.
I am going to try to find another photographer and see if a better job can be done. Since this may not lead to anything, I am sending the present pictures anyway.
I thank you for arranging for permission for us to use part of our immunochemistry grant for the construction of animal quarters.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
