Mr. William M. Hume
315 Montgomery Street
San Francisco, California
Dear Mr. Hume:
As the representative of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the California Institute of Technology, I am glad to express to you our thanks for your gift to the California Institute of Ten Thousand Dollars, to be used in support of a Fellowship for the purpose of studying the dehydration of vegetables over a two-year period. Professor A. J. Haagen-Smit, whom you met on December 26th, has made himself internationally known for his outstanding work on the chemistry of substances occurring in plants, and we may be confident that under his supervision the work supported by your gift will lead to valuable results.
I shall look forward to seeing you again, and to discussing with you the work which will be carried on under Professor Haagen-Smit's supervision.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling.
