Mr. Edward L. Bennett
Reed College
Portland, Oregon
Dear Mr. Bennett:
I am pleased to offer you appointment as Research Assistant, full time, on a war research project under contract between the California Institute of Technology and the National Defense Research Committee. The nature of the work is confidential, and the fact that you will be working under an NDRC contract should not be published, and should be told only to people who have reason to know.
The working hours per week number 44, and the salary is $150 per month. The work is closely related to pure scientific research, and the training would be valuable to you as preparation for work toward the doctorate. I hope that it will be possible later to transfer you to full time work toward the Ph.D. in Chemistry.
We have great need for assistants during the next few months, and I have requested President Scott to allow you to accept this appointment by December 1 of this year or shortly thereafter, giving you credit for the regaining work of your senior year at Reed College. I hope very much, because of the importance of the work to be done here, that this arrangement can be made and that you can accept this appointment and begin work early in December.
Please reply by collect telegram as soon as you can reach a decision.
Very truly yours,
Linus Pauling
