Professor Norris W. Rakestraw
Department of Chemistry
Brown University
Providence, Rhode Island
Dear Professor Rakestraw:
I do not know of any serious reason why the California Institute of Technology should not begin to operate on a year-round basis for all classes if, after additional consideration, this seems the desirable thing to do. It is my opinion that it might well be wise for this step to be taken.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dr. Randolph T. Major
Research Laboratory
Merck and Company, Inc.
Rahway, New Jersey
Dear Dr. Major:
Professor L. Zechmeister is sending separately to you samples of prolycopene and neo-β-carotene. These are in sealed tubes—the substances are oxidized in air. Each sample is between 15 and 20 milligrams; the difficulties of preparation at present are such that larger samples can not be made available, but I judge that a reasonably accurate assay of their vitamin A activities can be made with these. Professor Zechmeister has not yet succeeded in obtaining crystalline pro- γ-carotene in such large quantities, nor any of the other pro-carotenoids or neo-carotenoids of interest.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Mr. Arthur E. Macartney
Assistant Purchasing Agent
Long Beach Public Schools
715 Locust Avenue
Long Beach, California
Dear Mr. Macartney:
For cleaning our chemical glassware we use a powdered soap, called Wyandotte Detergent, which has cost us about five and a half cents per pound in barrels. This is somewhat abrasive, and for some purposes we prefer to use a pure soap solution. It is the opinion of the men on our staff that abrasive soap may be used in some cases for cleaning chemical glassware but that for certain pieces of apparatus, such as burets, its use is undesirable.
Yours truly,
Linus Pauling

Professor Warren C. Johnson
Chemistry Department
University of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois
Dear Warren:
Yost tells me that you have in mind a possible project of the development of a scheme of qualitative and quantitative analysis of gases that might be met in the field, and that he has talked with you about Carl Niemann and Ernest H. Swift at this Institute. You know Swift's capabilities well enough. I want to assure you that Niemann is an extremely able young man. He is smart, well trained and full of energy. He has been giving courses here in semi-micro organic analysis and he knows the subject from the ground up. I think that this would be a first rate place for this work to be done. We have some well equipped organic laboratories which could be used for this work and some fresh young Ph.D.'s with experience in organic analysis who could serve as assistants. I hope that you will consider this Institute seriously as a place for this contract, in case that it is decided that the work is to be done.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dearest Love:
This morning I opened my shade - and there was snow! Not a great deal, but enough to cover the ground with a soft white puff, about which was sagebrush covered with frost. It was beautiful. Now we are on the Wyoming plains - just beyond Laramie.
On this route & the S.P. there are tents and soldiers at all the tunnels - like Milton. In S.F. harbor there are battleships, and many cars loaded with guns, tanks, airplanes. The army and navy have taken over many docks.
I have a good breakfast but not lunch - we lose 2 hours today, so I can wait till dinner time. I have been reading applications and also the Sat. Eve. Post.
There are several women in the car, some one or two with a child. I asked one if she had just crossed the Pacific, & she said yes, from Hawaii. I asked if she was in Honolulu on Dec. 7, and she said yes, at Schofield Barracks. She didn't say anymore; and although I would have liked to hear more I didn't ask. I supposed they have been told not to say anything.
I got my wire off to Thorfin, who will probably meet me at 9
30
. Then on to New York at 2
30
.
Addis remembered that he had got a letter from Ralston, but he had lost it; so he wrote asking what had been in the letter.
Addis is to have a two-months Eastern trip March 7-May, under the Commonwealth Found
n
. I said that you & I would see him about Feb. 22.
I asked about paying him. He said he didn't charge fellow doctors, that [he didn't charge] Stanford professors, [that he didn't charge] clergymen, [that] he got a lot out of me, [that] he had asked me to come, and [that he] charged only to get rid of uninteresting patients.
I wore my longies last night, and was warm enough.
Much love to my little darling.
Linus
