Dr. Randolph T. Major
Research Laboratory
Merck and Company, Inc.
Rahway, New Jersey
Dear Dr. Major:
Professor L. Zechmeister is sending separately to you samples of prolycopene and neo-β-carotene. These are in sealed tubes—the substances are oxidized in air. Each sample is between 15 and 20 milligrams; the difficulties of preparation at present are such that larger samples can not be made available, but I judge that a reasonably accurate assay of their vitamin A activities can be made with these. Professor Zechmeister has not yet succeeded in obtaining crystalline pro- γ-carotene in such large quantities, nor any of the other pro-carotenoids or neo-carotenoids of interest.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
