Mr. Harry P. Davis, Superintendent
Permanente Magnesium Plant
Todd-California Shipbuilding Corporation
Chemical Engineering Division
P.O. Box 29
San Jose, California
Dear Mr. Davis:
In our researches on the structure of crystals and biological materials with the use of x-rays we have need for magnesium crystals to be used to monochromatize the x-radiation. While I was visiting the Shell Development Company I saw some crystallized magnesium in Mr. W. J. Hund's office, and learned from Mr. Hund that it had been obtained from your plant. Would it be possible for us to get from you some suitable crystals of magnesium for our work? The amount involved would be small, if the crystals were selected for their suitability. Dr. Robert B. Corey or Dr. Henri Levy of our Laboratories could come to the plant some time during the next few weeks to make a selection, if the arrangements for this could be made.
The work for which the crystals is needed is largely research on biological problems which is subsidized by the Rockefeller Foundation, and in smaller part for x-ray research in connection with the work being carried out here for the National Defense Research Committee.
With thanks for your consideration of this matter, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

- Letter from LP to Mr. J.F.M. Taylor, Shell Development Company. Explains why he has decided not accept their offer of appointment as Director of Research of the Shell Development Company, but thanks Taylor for considering him. LP Safe: Drawer 2, Folder 2.006
- Letter from LP to Prof. Herbert Harned, Sterling Chemistry Laboratory, Yale University, RE: Discusses his comments on Harned's manuscript, noting he spoke with Young in Chicago. Apologizes for the over-critical nature of some of the remarks. [Note from Harned to LP November 16, 1941] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #151.13, file:(Harned, Herbert)]
- Letter from T.F. Young, Department of Chemistry, the University of Chicago to LP RE: Asks LP's opinion concerning an aspect of the iodic acid anomaly, does not understand why the hydration of the acid seems to affect the entropy of the salt, has enclosed a graph of the curve relating the B term of the heat of dilution equation to the sum of the entropies of the ions. Asks LP his opinion, and points out other facts that do not agree with LP's treatment, asking also for perhaps an alternative explanation. Graph is included. [Filed under LP Correspondence: 462.3]
