Dearest Pete:
I wrote to Mr. Moore this morning saying that both you and Crellie would stay nine more days. I hope you want to stay. Your letter tonight sounded doubtful.
I want to see you and Crellie so badly. Daddy is in San Francisco. I will come and get you one week from Saturday—August 16th. If I come before I’m afraid Crellie will feel bad if I leave.
Listen Peter on Friday the 8th at 8 o’ clock at night. I will telephone to you. You stay by the telephone where it is and when the telephone rings you will know it is the Mamma.
I wish I’d decided to get you tomorrow. Linda is better but is still thin and rather weak.
Have a good time, darling. Be good to little Crellie. I’m afraid he is homesick.
I have a nice surprise for you.
Love and kisses,
Mamma

Dearest Love:
I have just reached the lab, turned in my samples, and had some blood taken by Miss Addis. It was fine to see Dr and Mrs Addis again. They were sorry not to see you here with me. Mrs. A. says that Dr. A. is getting thinner and thinner and crosser and crosser because he works too much and doesn't eat enough. They were at Tahoe last week - but he worked on some papers (or a book) instead of resting. They are going again next week. I asked them to come and see us sometime - promising that they could be as quiet as they want to be.
Wendell met me and took me to Dale's , where I am staying (Mrs S is away). Wendell had given the bride away the day before, at Fort Ord, + the Latimer house is full of relatives. Wendell has loaned me his Mercury, the Ford being out of order. Dale and I going there tonight for dinner. I slept well last night (I got an extra blanket before going to bed), and got up this morning after Dale had left. I cooked two eggs (fried), two pieces of toast (salty), and had coffee and orange juice.
It was wonderful to come over the Bay Bridge! The whole effect of bridge and island, bay and city is breath-taking. I think that I shall never be used to the experience.
The bus-train ride was fun--perhaps even better than the Daylight. The bus was comfortable, and the drive over the Ridge enjoyable. The driver looked as though he were thoroughly reliable. He kept a uniform speed which seemed to me to be about 45 miles per hour. At 400 we changed to the train. It was just like the Daylight except that only about 1/4 or 1/3 of the seats were taken. I could sprawl over my double seat. I liked the ride through the broad San Joaquin valley. I saw some interesting things - people who had parked their big trucks beside the road during the heat of the day and were lying sound asleep underneath them, stretched out directly on
[page 2]
the gravel of the road shoulder; and the sign on a ranch in the valley, "Stallions at stud - Mr Coit."
I bought my cheese and some vitamin on the way to the train.
The lab looks nice after its repainting. I am going to tell Addis that its charm has gone.
What brands of tomato juice have no added salt? Mrs A. wants to know!
I have now talked to Addis. He seemed encouraged. My serum protein is better - up to 4.6% from 3.4). I don't know how my urine is - I'll find out tomorrow - I'm to come back at 11
30
to be able to talk longer. Addis said that the hospital doctors don't know about nephritis - they see only the worst cases.
My blood is better - 90% of normal. I had been afraid of getting anemia. He said 2 puloules[?] of lextron would be enough for me. Also he said the soreness of my testicles last fall + the little growths behind them now are due to edema.
I love you, sweet darling girl. I'll probably come home Sunday, arriving at LA at 5 PM.
Give my love to Linda + Liny.

[There are 3 cartoons cut from a newspaper included:]
The first is entitled "These Women! --By d'Alessio"
It is a picture of a young woman having her palm read by a gypsy looking woman, they are sitting across from one another at a round table.
The caption reads: "You are about to meet a tall, dark and handsome man who will introduce you to a short fat man with lots of money!"
The second is entitled "Strictly Business --By Dale McFeatters"
This is a picture of two arabic men, wearing turbans and sitting on the floor. One is smoking a hookah and the other is attempting to smoke a Dictaphone, and speaking:
"Personally, I don't find the American kind very satisfactory."
The third cartoon is entitled "Side Glances — by Galbraith"
There are two men talking in the foreground, watching a woman ,who is looking through binoculars at a plane. Next to the woman a young boy is pointing up at the plane. They are all standing on a dock.
The man is saying: "She thinks she's the best plane spotter around here, but she wouldn't last five minutes if she didn't bring that kid of hers along to identify them."

Gillman Hall UC5 Aug 1941 [written later by LP]
Wednesday, 6 PM.
Dearest little sweetheart:
Today I stayed late in bed, and then at [unreadable] went to see Dr Addis (a special non-clinic-day visit), taking a night urine sample. I was to have lunch with him, but he had to go to a meeting (luncheon) of a committee to arrange a "help the Allies" meeting to counteract some new Hoover-Wilbur-Hutchins statements. A Dr Jean Oliver came in (pathologist now in New York) and twitted him about being interested in defending America etc. only after Russia got involved. Dr Oliver looked interesting. I went to lunch with a young instructor, Dr Rantz. He specializes on scarlet fever, and has some ideas on preventing consequent nephritis.
My blood urea was 21 mg/100 cc - just normal! It had before been 35 to 45. Addis was pleased. The protein in urine is the same, about - 9 g. at night, 12 day.
Addis says that I probably still have 8 or 10 lbs of edema, and really weigh now only 157 (total 167); with no exercise I should get thin. He may cut me to 50 g per day. I'll probably have a basal metabolism test to be sure that I'm getting sufficient protein. Also tomorrow I'll have more x-rays taken - my eyes looked at by Addis.
I talked all afternoon (2 to 4
30
) with him, about starting a protein institute, about Freddie, about G.N., about the nature of nephritis, about urochrome, etc. It was fun. He has twice said that
[page 2]
[unreadable] great admiration for ^you because of [inserted] your decision to increase my salt. I think that he [unreadable] you.
I talked to Lewis yesterday for an [unreadable]. He went away last night. Addis said that he would be glad to talk to Lewis. Let's arrange it the next time we're up. He said Bloomfield knows dysentery, & could help him.
Last night we had dinner at the Lats. I talked with Eleanor and Robert about the funny papers - they enjoyed it. I am reading Shirer's "Berline Diary", borrowed from Lat.
I'm going to cook some supper now and go to bed & read for a while, to get rested.
Rantz and Addis think that nephritis may be due to antibody formation in some way - explaining why it follows strep. infection & scarlet fever & gonococcal endocarditis or other endocarditis, all of which give sudden antibody formation. Also the reticuloendothelial cells in the glomerular capillaries proliferate. Rantz is hoping to test this & perhaps ultimately a preventive treatment might be devised.
I love you, darling little wife.

11 AM Thursday
[Note on left margin] Salt 2.4 Tuesday's sample 6.3g.
Dearest little wife:
I love you, and I'm glad to be able to send you the news that Dr Addis seems to be well please with my progress. My protein is about 4 g now - I haven't yet got the report on blood and casts. My weight is 165 lbs. Dr A says that the trouble with my fingers and toes may be Reynaud's disease - a spastic condition of the arteries of unknown cause and no treatment. Apparently it isn't serious and perhaps not related to nephritis. He suggested seeing a skin specialist in New York.
I hope you weren't lonesome alone in your big bed - but you probably slept with Crelly. I was comfortable and not cold, and I slept well. I delivered my package to Ogg at Palo Alto when the train stopped for a moment.
Mrs Addis and Trigger said that our Christmas card was wonderful. They asked about you. Dr A said that you had written that I was working too hard.
I'll add a note about other analyses [sic] after a while, when I've talked with Dr A again.
Dr A. wants to keep some B complex on hand to give to indigent patients who can't get on relief (out-of-state, etc). I have a notion to send him a bottle of my Thompsons for this purpose.
It was fun being in the blacked-out dining car on the train. The Pullman windows aren't blacked out.

3 PM - Ferry building - waiting for ferry to get ready.
Dr Addis took me to lunch - with Mrs A. I asked him about my plans for a chemicomedical [sic] research institute. He is enthusiastic - he says that the LA General Hospital is the best place in the world west for clinical material, and that the USC people are very good - especially Ralston, and could collaborate well. He suggested getting Schroeder from the Rock. Inst. for work on hypertension; he had a letter from Page (in charge of the work Oc [?] Helmer was helping with) saying that they weren't getting anywhere.
My blood is at 91.6%. Dr A mentioned that a patient there today had come in in 1922 in just the shape I was in last year. The poor fellow sells Pierce Arrows & now has a stomach ulcer. We are lucky to have a good steady job.
Love to the children & to you from your own Paddy

August 15, 1941
Dr. Karl Landsteiner
The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research
66th Street and York Avenue
New York, New York
Dear Dr. Landsteiner:
I have nothing much new to report regarding our serological experiments. Dr. Dan Campbell is now back at work here, and he and Dr. Pressman are beginning to obtain some new results. One result of interest is the analysis of a precipitate formed by substances like resorcinol or phloroglucinol with two attached groups. These precipitates all have the molecular ratio of antibody to antigen equal approximately to one, which indicates strongly that the antibodies are bivalent, since the antigens are bivalent.
I have just returned from a stay at the Stanford University Hospital with Dr. Thomas Addis. I learned from him that he thinks that nephritis following scarlet fever or other infection is perhaps the result of some abnormality in immunological mechanism. I asked if anyone had ever observed the incidents of nephritis or similar kidney damage in rabbits or other experimental animals after injection with ordinary antigens or with azoproteins. He thought that no such observation had been reported, but he felt that it would be wise to ask you about this. There is no good way of inducing nephritis in animals at present, and if Addis is right in thinking that the immunological mechanism is responsible and if also it is found possible to produce nephritis by injection of antigens, a study of this phenomenon might well lead to some significant results with regards to the proper treatment of scarlet fever patients to avoid subsequent nephritis. With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Mr. F. L. Avera

Dear Mr. Avera:
I rather think that the forces corresponding to nuclear spin bonds are too weak for these bonds to be significant with respect to the anomalous melting point of methane.
