Professor H. I. Schlesinger
Department of Chemistry
University of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois
Dear Professor Schlesinger:
I am sorry to have been slow in answering your letter. I was very pleased indeed to receive it, and to learn that you would like me to teach during the summer quarter at the University of Chicago. After thinking over the situation thoroughly, I have decided that I shall be able to accept your invitation, with the understanding mentioned in your letter, that the arrangement may possibly be cancelled because of defense or war work. I shall plan to be in Chicago from June 24th to July 24th. I suggest that I give two courses, one of two lectures per week in the day time, and one of one long lecture per week in the evening. As the title of one set, I suggest "The Chemical Bond and the Structure of Molecules" and of the other, "Diffraction Methods of Determining the Structure of Molecules and Crystals." Perhaps the second could be the evening course, but the decision regarding this may be made as seems best to you.
With best regards, and with my sincere thanks to you for your invitation, I am,
Very truly yours,
Linus Pauling
