Dearest Sweetheart:
As the result of my visit to the University of Chicago + to Thorfin I have many things to tell you. First I shall tell you that I love you and shall be happy to get back to you so that I can squeeze you. Second, that I love our sweet little children. Third, that on reaching Chicago at 9 this morning I checked my bag, walked by the Stevens Hotel over to the Illinois Central, and rode to 55
th
St., + then walked to Thorfin's office (He is coming on to Washington tomorrow.) He at once asked if I were coming to U. Chicago next fall. I said I know nothing about it. After considering my answer a while he swore me to secrecy + divulged that I (and 22 others) would be given honorary degrees on Sept. 29th 1941 at the the [sic] celebration of the 50th year of existence of the university. Then I went up to see Schlesinger, who told me to the same secret. At luncheon at the Ouadrangle Club Vice-President Woodward, Dean Poak, New Dean A.lt. + others made the same communication. I seem to be scheduled to speak at the chemistry symposium, the biology symposium, and the physics symposium. There are plans under way for entertaining both you + me. The only physicist is Ernest Orlando. I've been wondering whether you + I could drive to Chicago; but in view of the [?]-just at registration-I'm afraid we must go by train.
Thorfin is glad that you are well again. Phoeke had been appendix removed this summer. It was in bad shape. She is well now, but I didn't see her because she is in bed with a cold. I saw Franck, Frazer Young, Whelsoud-all of whom send regards to you. Also Schlesinger. Schlesinger + Thorfin are having some trouble (mild)
[page 2]
with Franck because he wants too much room-a large room for each of his students.
Thorfin made a mysterious remark about my relation to the Berkeley department. When it drew no response he said that Frazer Young had brought back from Berkeley last week the rumor that you (indirectly) would be the next Dean [?] of the UC school of Chemistry! I said that I had been approached os far only by the janitor.
The trees in Illinois + Indiana are beautiful + green, some beginning to assume their fall colors.
Leghton was at the Chemistry bldg; he too is to attend our meeting. Then Thorfin + I saw him at the station (Thorfin drove me down in his car), and he introduced us to Mrs Leighton, saying to me "She is Susan's sister." " " seems pleasant-perhaps a bit old + wrinkled looking, they are on this train- in the car behind mine, but I haven't seen them since the minute of meeting in the station. Mrs L. Said that this is her first trip East. She is eager to see Washington.
I saw Eckart Hoyt, Mark, Weldon Brown, Dempster, Hans Geffron also, with time only to say hello.
I have bought a little paper-bound mystery story, by Dorothy Sayers, + shall read it after dinner, I think.
My bed last night was much better-a lower berth with a fine sponge-rubber mattress. They are surely good-perhaps we should get a thing one for our bed.
I adore you, darling little wife. Love from your

Taylor came to check on me for Pres. of Stanford [on front of envelope written later by LP]

AM
Dearest little love:
Now I have arrived safely in Washington. I came to the Hay-Adams, and found that they had reserved a room for me, but that it would not be ready until after lunch. So I walked over to the Carnegie Institution building, at 16
th
& P Sts., to see if W.K.Lewis were there - he had written that he wanted to talk over some problems with me. He was there, but was already in a meeting; I left my address with the secretary to be given to him, and walked back to the hotel, where I am now, at the writing desk in the lobby. I hope that I can get everything done today and tomorrow, so that I may leave for home tomorrow night. I hope too that the trip
[page 2]
turns out to have been worth while.
After dinner last night (roast chicken) I went in the lounge to read the New York Times and drink a B & B. After a while Leighton and his wife came in, and we talked about the foreign situation (our ideas are similar) and about the different between Western universities and Eastern - in particular the lack of unity of Eastern departments, the jealousies and competitions between individuals. The Leighton said that Taylor had come down not to get my opinion of others for the presidency of Stanford but to form an opinion about me. I can't imagine having such a job - I can't think of a
[pave 3]
single one of the duties of a president which would be fun; but I don't think that the chances of remaining under consideration long are great enough to justify our worrying about the possibility. You would surely be a cute little president's wife, however.
No letter has yet come from you - but I think that with a little delay because of wrong address they will be delivered.
With love from your own
Paddy.

Wednesday at 6 PM
Dearest little love:
I was getting discouraged by 4 this afternoon, but now I feel fine, because of several things. First, I must say again that I love you, and am anxious to begin my journey back to you. At 300 this afternoon I had seen no one, I hadn't yet got into my hotel room (because of negligence of clerks when they went off duty), I was tired, I didn't know whether I'd ever get to start back to you, no letter had arrived, and it was raining. Now I have talked with W.K. Lewis, Conant, Bush, Tenney L. Davis, Kistiakowsky, learned that I shall probably take over the nitrocellulose (smoke- [new line] less powder) field, working in Pasadena and with a full-time explosives expert as associate, that I can start home tomorrow afternoon at 5:45, reaching home about 730 Sunday night (if my plans work out); and on returning to the hotel I find a fine letter from you, written Sunday morning, and a
[Page 2]
letter (enclosed) saying that we shall go to New York next March 7th to receive the William H. Nichols medal (this is confidential).
After writing you this morning I went for a walk, and visited the Archives building, and then returned to the hotel and read in the lobby, to be on hand when the call from W.K. Lewis came. Then I came up to my room, waited until 430, went to the Carnegie Inst.n for my conference, and returned here. I had thought of getting in touch with Oliver or Sterling, but I have to read a report by Kisty & EBW Jr on detonation waves and to prepare a proposal regarding my job, so I shall just stay here - going down for dinner before long. Give Crelly my love - perhaps he could come to the station when I return. I love you, darling, and the little children.

Mr. James B. Conant
National Defense Research Committee
1530 P Street N.W.
Washington D.C.
Dear Conant:
At our meeting on October 3 W. K. Lewis said that one of the most pressing problems i that of devising an apparatus for indicated the partial pressure of oxygen in the presence of other gases. After visiting the Naval Research Laboratories the next day, Hogness and Latimer told me that this problem had been very strongly presented to them there. I have just thought of a method for doing this.
The one property of oxygen with differentiates it from nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and all other common gases, except nitric oxide, is its paramagnetism. The mass magnetic susceptibility of oxygen is several thousand times as great in magnitude as that of those other gases. An instrument indicating the magnetic susceptibility of a mixture of gases containing a significant amount of oxygen would accordingly give the amount of oxygen present, the presence of the other gases causing no significant error. I have designed a device involving a small strong permanent magnet and a pair of small hollow spheres suspended from a quartz fiber, which acts as a torsion balance. The susceptibility of the gas surrounding the apparatus would be indicated by having a beam of light reflected from a minute mirror attached to the fiber passing through a wedge into a photocall, which would then indicate on a dial on the instrument panel. Order of magnitude calculations suggest that it should be possible to build an apparatus of this sort weighing only a few ounces, which would give the amount of oxygen
[2]
present at partial pressures of around one tenth to one fifth atmosphere with an accuracy of a percent or two. The susceptibility of oxygen varies inversely with the absolute temperature; this variation might well be corrected by a suitable design of the apparatus, taking into consideration the temperature coefficient of the torsional modulus of quartz.
I feel very optimistic about this idea. There is, of course, the possibility that some serious source of difficulty has been overlooked, but I think that the apparatus can be built successfully, and that it could ultimately be manufactured in quantity at relatively low cost.
Yesterday I sent the following telegram receiving a reply today from Dr. Chadwell giving permission to go ahead: "Have most promising method determination partial pressure oxygen. Best available post-doctorate assistant offered job elsewhere. May I hold him. Please telegraph or telephone." Dr. Reuben Wood, who received his Ph.D. here in 1939 and has been post-doctorate fellow during the year 1939-1940, has said that he will accept appointment as a post-doctorate assistant for national defense work, at $2000 per year, beginning as soon as possible. I set him at work today on the verification of my calculations dealing with this apparatus, so that if the appointment can be made retroactive it might begin on October 9, 1940.
I am enclosing separately information about Dr. Wood, in case that clearance must be obtained for him.
I have the impression that it is desired that an apparatus of the sort under discussion be developed within three months. If there is this need for rapid work, i suggest that a second post-doctorate assistant also be appointed, to help with the theoretical calculations involved.
[3]
There is a man available for this work, Dr. Sidney Weinbaum, an American citizen born in Russia. Dr. Weinbaum obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical physics at this Institute in 1933. I would suggest that we not acquaint him with the complete problem, but rather set him to work on individual calculations, such as the calculation of product of field strength and its gradient for different magnet designs. I have no question as to Dr. Weinbaum's loyalty, but I think that if he were appointed he could do his work satisfactorily without knowledge of the nature of the problem as a whole. Dr. Weinbaum would accept appointment at $2000.
Yours truly,
Linus Pauling

Dr. W.A. Wooster
Department of Mineralogy and Petrology
University of Cambridge

Cambridge, England
Dear Dr. Woodter:
I have not yet heard about any decision by the Rockefeller Foundation regarding Dr. Perutz. I agree with you that it is unfortunate that the situation in England is such that he was no allowed to continue his work, but I can also understand the reasons which lead your government to decide that step had to be taken.
We are all very happy that England has succeeded in putting up such a good flight against this aggressor. I also feel that the preparations for national defense in this country are going along satisfactorily.
With best regards,
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
