Mrs. Edward W. Crellin

Dear Mrs. Crellin:
I wish to thank you very much for sending me Mr. Carl Heprude's address. I have talked over the situation with Dr. Lu, and have decided not to write to Mr. Heprude until a definite decision has been made by Dr. Lu. Dr. Lu still thinks that it might be wise for him try to get to Chungking as soon as possible. He has, however, talked over the situation with the Chinese Embassy, and the Embassy is now making inquiries to find out whether his status can be changed in such a way as to permit him to accept a Noyes Fellowship. I hope that this can be done, since Dr. Lu is a very able man and would do first rate work during the year if he could stay here.
Affectionately yours,
[Linus Pauling]

Dr. Alex Kossiakoff
Department of Chemistry
The Catholic University of America
Washington, D.C.
Dear Alex:
Schomaker and I have been very slow about writing to you about your manuscript. I am now returning the manuscript separately by mail, and the figures also. I have made a few suggested changes on the manuscript, and have given the paper a number for the Gates-Crellin series, and have written in the names of the authors, Kossiakoff and Springall. I think it might be wise to send a copy to Dr. Springall, but I recommend submitting the manuscript for publication in the Journal of the American Chemical Society without waiting to hear from him.
My general comments are the following. The paper might be condensed a little, although I would not recommend very much condensation. I think that a table should be given at the end in which the structural parameters finally accepted for the molecules are shown. This table could be referred to then in the summary. I suggest that the description of the models be changed by the inclusion of the various bond angles. I have the impression, because for 1,3,5-tribromobenzene the models are labeled J to M that perhaps other models also were tried; possibly you should mention these in the text. The low Br-Br peaks at radial distribution curves, compared with what is expected if the scattering factors are taken proportional to atomic numbers, are rather striking, and I think you should make some explicit mention of them and of their explanation in terms of the Z - f values.
Dr. Alex Kossiakoff
September 19, 1940
I think that you will be able to understand Schomaker's various difficulties from his remarks on the accompanying yellow sheets. You might think over his suggestions, and then use your own judgment regarding how to handle them. I am enclosing also with the manuscript a page sent me by Springall regarding the preparation of the materials. You should include this in the manuscript. Springall's address at present is Department of Organic Chemistry The University, Bristol 8, England.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,

Sunday morning.
Dearest sweet little wife:
I love you very much - more than anything in the world. I wish that you were with me, to see the beautiful mountains in the distance and the blue and yellow flowers close by, and in the distance too, since the yellow flowers are in some places so thick that they give a solid color to large areas on hills miles away.
Last night I read some stories in the Saturday Evening Post til 11, and then went to bed; I woke often, but only for short periods, and got up at 9 (mountain time). For breakfast I had grapefruit and wheat cakes; and I talked with the man across from me at the table - an architect.
[Page 2]
Then I had walk for fifteen minutes at Williams; we have now just gone through Flagstaff.
I have been thinking about Dr. Luis Crystal, hyperol [sic], but have not yet got down to work on it. Hyperol [sic] is a compound of urea and hydrogen peroxide.
I am astonished at the beautiful flowers. We are passing Indian paintbrush too. We have now gone from sage to the pine forests.
Give my love to the dear little children. Be happy. Don't worry about your talk Wednesday. Your dress is most becoming. You are beautiful.
Love from your own
Linus

Dearest little love:
I have just found that we did not remember the hotel correctly, and I am afraid that I shan't get your letters. The hotel is the
Hay-Adams House
16th + H Sts.
But there is a chance that the postman will try the Hay-Adams, since no other hotel has a similar name.
I did not write you again yesterday because I was car-sick! In the morning I wrote to you just after breakfast, and I watched the scenery
[page 2]
while bent forward writing. I began to feel queazy [sic] - and the feeling stayed all day!
This is the first time for years that I have been train-sick.
At Albuquerque I bought a tiny bead doll from a little Indian to give to Crelly.
I spent most of the day working on Dr Lu's [?] crystal, but without success. I also read some stories
[page 3]
in Colliers + the American.
I just saw a limerick in the paper:
There once was a maiden so quaint that some people called her a saint. But a fellow a fellow named Russ said, "If you heard her cuss you'd sure be convinced that she ain't."
The paper is the Albuquerque News.
I talked for half an hour yesterday with the man who had sat across from me, just before he got off at Albuquerque. He
[page 4]
is a Memphis architect, named Robert Stacey, traveling for a few weeks to get over nervousness resulting from overwork to meet some contract deadline. I suggested that he take some 3.3 mg B1 tablets, which he said he would do.
I still have my upper berth, although I have spoken to the conductor about it. The train is full, with many passengers dead-heads (riding on passes- such as old railway employees). I overheard one old boy say to another that he remembered clearly some events in 1869.
I found a very interesting journal - the J. of the U.S. Naval Institute - and have been reading it (issue of Sept. 1940).
Time passes awfully slowly when you are not with me, dear love.
I have a notion to return on the Scout, even
[page 5]
though my ticket is first-class. The Scout gets in at 8 AM, #4 at 11.
Best wishes for your speech. I wish I could see you - you look awfully cute in your new dress. I want to take you out, so as to be seen with such a good-looking girl. All the love in the world from you own,
Linus.
