March 1, 1940
Dear Professor Sommerfeld:
Professor Stueckelberg has written me that you have not heard from me as since you so kindly sent me a copy of Volume II of "Atombau und Spektrallinien," and I am afraid that you have not received my last letter to you. I wish to thank you very much for remembering me. I have read a good part of the book with great interest, and many of the men in the laboratory have also been reading my copy.
My wife and I are very happy in our new house, which we built and moved into a year ago. It is five miles from the Institute, just at the foot of Mt. Wilson, on the edge of a canyon. We have two acres of ground and there are no other houses nearby. It is a fine place for the children. We have four children now, the youngest, Edward Crellin Pauling, being now two and one half years old. I am enclosing a copy of our Christmas card, which was not mailed to you because of the uncertainty in the mail at that time.
We are getting along very well in our new laboratory, the Crellin Laboratory. We have in the Department of Chemistry about eighty-five men doing advanced work, including the doctor candidates and post-doctorate fellows. I hope that you will be able to make another trip to the United States before long, and that this time Frau Sommerfeld will come with you. My wife and I would like very much to see you again, and many of the other Americans who have been with you in Munich have said the same thing. Now that you have retired you have time enough to make the trip, and if conditions for travel get better I hope that a trip of this sort can be arranged.
I have always been grateful to the Guggenheim Foundation for providing the opportunity for me to come to Munich and study with you, and now I am repaying the Foundation in some measure by acting as a member of the Committee of Selection. I went to New York for this purpose last week, and shall go again in about three weeks.
With love to you and Frau Sommerfeld, I am
Your Pasadena student,
Linus Pauling

Dr. Eugene H. Eyster
Department of Physics
University of Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Dear Eugene:
I am glad to extend to you the offer by the California Institute of appointment as George Ellery Hale Research Fellow in Radiation Chemistry for the year 1940-41, with stipend $2000 for the year. The appointment would be renewed for a second year if you desire, but you are not required to make the decision now as to whether or not you would want to continue as Fellow for a second year. You would have no duties and no obligations other than the prosecution of research.
You would, of course, be free to work in any field you desire, and we would try to provide whatever material support you need. I would like, however, to suggest a field of investigation which has appealed to me recently as a promising one, and which might also appeal to you. This is the application of the Rabi molecular beam technique to problems of molecular structure. You probably know that Rabi has determined the internuclear distance in the hydrogen molecule by his method, and I think that other internuclear distances could be determined similarly. He is now getting very accurate values of electric dipole moments of alkali halide gas molecules by measuring the frequency of radio waves necessary to cause transition from one stark effect level to another. Last month I looked at Rabi's apparatus and talked with him. He is willing and, I think, would be glad to have someone apply his techniques in the molecular structure field, since he himself plans to work only on fundamental problems of nuclear structure
[page 2]
and to develop possible applications for the technique, but not to apply it in a systematic way. If you would be interested in supervising the construction of a Rabi apparatus it might be a good idea for you to spend some time with Rabi in New York. You would have collaboration here on the radio side if you wanted it, since Potapenko would be only too glad to put his radio wave to some good use.
Schomaker is staying on next year as Senior Fellow in Research, and Wilson is to be Instructor in Applied Chemistry. Stosick is taking Helmholz's place as Instructor in Freshman Chemistry with Helmholz going to Dartmouth.
We are hoping that you will decide to come back here for a while. Badger would be especially glad to have you here.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Friday March 22. 7 P.M.
Darling Paddy; I didn't get your two letters until this afternoon because I went at eleven with the Dunhams to that luncheon at the Biltmore for Mr. Mannerstedt (?) who has a fresh, sincere manner but not too attractive - He has an engaging secretary at his elbow who is obviously indispensable and whom I admired very much.
I enjoyed myself very much and ordered two lamb chops - $1.25 - .05 tax .20 tip - $150.
Do you want to go with Ted on Tuesday to a luncheon on Los Angeles for Conant? The Harvard Club I take it and Ted is inviting you. I accepted provisionally for you subject of course to your wishes for the matter. Ted is adorable! Miriam is grand fun and we had a good time! I even said a word or two - and our Dr. whats his name was no doubt the least bit taken. Amusing things happened which I'll tell you.
Peter and Linda went to see "Pinnocchioo" this afternoon by themselves! Then they met me at "Union Now". Pretty smart, eh!
[?] Pauling has poison oak, I think. At least he is red and scratches.
How are you, you sweet heart? I love you very much and I'll be happy when you are at home again.
Linda won the prize for finding the most eggs at he Easter egg hunt at school today. She always wins at such a game. Isn't that remarkable?
The Dunhams said that the children were remarkable when they were there. They think we must have done all sorts of thing to make them be so good. I said we'd done nothing but put them on their own!
Good night sweet darling. I hope you get this.
Your girl who loves you
Ava Helen Pauling
P.S. I'll get the information in the morning about whats his name. I simply can't remember it at this moment. I don't like this flickery light of yours - I'm going to take it back.
I was really enthused today about "Union Now" and I feel now that we must have some system of dues - A definite income and in the mean time I must get some contributions from some where.
That nice Dr. Borlaw wants to be remembered to you. He is shy and sweet and a gentleman as Ted is but there aren't many such. This afternoon was the funeral of Mr. Celerman who died a day ago - you remember him?
Love,

Dear Lynn:
Our set of punched cards is now being prepared, and will be ready in a few weeks. The machines will not be here until May. The Fourier series set contains about 70,000 cards, and would cost you about $150 plus some charge for freight. To use the cards you would need a sorter and an eighty-counter high-speed alphabetical direct subtraction tabulator No. 405.
I am glad to learn that ammonium heptafluosilicate is working out well and that you have a reasonable structure for BaSiS6. I trust that your small twin is really over his difficulties.
Best regards to your whole family,
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
