Dear Joe:
I am very pleased indeed to learn that you are applying for a Lalor Fellowship for the coming year with the plan of working at this Institute, and I am glad to give my permission and indeed extend a hearty invitation to you to come here. The problem which you suggest on the development of molecular eigenfunctions seems to me to be a very good one. I have noticed, however, that the announcements of Lalor Fellowships stress applications of chemistry to biology, and I would like to suggest to you that you might be interested in theoretical work on the color of organic molecules with especial reference to naturally occurring substances. You have probably seen my note on this subject in the Proceedings of the National Academy-- I am sending the reprint to you separately. There is a great amount of work which could be done in this field, and if you desire to mention this problem also in your Lalor application you have my approval.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

- Letter from LP to William S. Klein RE: While interested in Klein's discussion of the Balmer equation, LP does not believe that it has the general significance of wave equation or rules of quantum mechanics in general unless extended to handle mechanical systems in general. [Klein's letter to LP December 15, 1939] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #200, Folder #200.4]
- Letter from M. S. Newman, Ohio State University to LP RE: Newman is glad the crystals of coronene are satisfactory. He will attempt to cause the crystals to form with a different shape now. Sturdivant is free to measure the index of refraction of these crystals if he wishes. [LP's letter to Newman December 14, 1939] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #287, Folder #287.6]
- Letter from T. D. Stewart, UC Berkeley to LP RE: Inviting LP to speak at the Berkeley section of the A. C. S. meeting sometime during the spring. [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #377, Folder #377.9]
