Mr. F. A. Philbrick
c/o J. C. Hogg, Esq.
3 Marston Street
Exeter, New Hampshire
Dear Mr. Philbrick:
I have discussed the problem described in your letter with Professor Haagen-Smit and Professor Went. These men feel that your interests lie close to those of the plant physiologists, and they would welcome your presence in the plant physiology laboratory, where you could carry out experiments along the lines you suggest. Dr. Went has long been interested in this particular field of research and has at various times carried out research in this direction. Since the conductivity methods are not satisfactory for studying the translocation and uptake of ions, work has been started here on the use of radioactive isotopes and heavy isotopes, and it is planned to make thermocouple measurements on the transpiration stream. It will be necessary to carry out all these experiments under controlled circumstances. The plant physiologists have recently completed a greenhouse, where just this equipment has been installed with this purpose in mind.
I am enclosing a reprint of a paper published recently by Professor Went dealing with the transport of ions in plant tissues.
The work which is now under way here may not be exactly what you had in mind. There is, however, very close cooperation between the plant physiologists and the chemists here, and I am sure that you could get instruction in microchemical methods from Professor Haagen-Smit if you were to come.
Sincerely yours,
L

Dean F. A. Gilfillan
Department of Chemistry
Oregon State College
Corvallis, Oregon
Corvallis, Oregon
I am very glad to write that I shall be able to take a short leave from the Institute at the end of the month, and to participate in your dedication of the new chemistry building on Saturday, December 2. My wife and I plan to drive to Corvallis arriving Friday morning December 1 and leaving again on Sunday morning. I would have been very sorry if conditions had been such as to make me miss such an important event as the dedication of this building, with its significance for the future development of your chemistry department.
I suppose that you will want me to give a technical talk on some subject such as "The Significance of the Resonance Phenomenon in Chemistry," and perhaps also to make a few remarks at a formal ceremony. I am willing to do just what you want, but I wish that you would tell me in detail what your plans are, so that I can make adequate preparation.
With best regards, and looking forward to seeing you and my other old friends, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dr. Lewis S. Ramsdell
Mineralogical Laboratory
University of Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Dear Dr. Ramsdell
I am glad to learn from your letter that your plans to come here next spring have now become definite. I shall probably be in the East between April 10 to May 15. If your plans involve your arriving here during that period, we would better make definite arrangements regarding your work in order that you would not lose time.
I have looked over your data on nesquehonite, without having had any inspiration. I notice that Fenoglio gives the impression that the point group symmetry must be holohedral because of the presence of two planes of symmetry on a Laue photograph. Since the Laue symmetry for all three orthorhombic crystal classes is the same, this observation does not show holohedry. Perhaps it will be necessary for you to consider hemihedral and hemimorphic space groups also. Moreover, even if the presence of one glide plane is indicated, the hemimorphic space group Pmn (or Pnm) would have to be considered, since it is not possible to say what the direction of the horizontal is for an orthorhombic crystal unless it shows good phase development corresponding to D2.
Very truly yours,
Linus Pauling

Professor E. Bright Wilson, Jr.
Chemical Laboratory of Harvard University
12 Oxford Street
Cambridge, Massachusetts
Dear Bright:
I am pleased indeed to think that I have been asked to talk at Wellesley and that you haven't yet been invited even though you are so much nearer.
I have just noticed that the Cincinnati meeting comes between the 8th and 12th of April, and there is a small possibility that I can start east in time to make this meeting. Will you tell me what sort of a talk you would want me to give at your symposium, if I could come, and how long it should be.
I have written Benjamin to the effect that we don't mind waiting for two or three years to put out a new edition of QUANTUM MECHANICS. I got the impression from the McGraw-Hill man who came through here that they were in a hurry for the new edition. I agree with you that the book should be pretty thoroughly revised, and that a considerable change in our treatment of general quantum mechanics should be made.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
