- Letter from E. Bright Wilson, Jr. Harvard University to LP RE: Wilson is glad that LP will probably be able to talk at his symposium in Boston. He is miffed that LP is asked to speak at Wellesley and he has not. He does not want to begin work on a new edition of Quantum Mechanics and it will take him longer than two months when he does want to. - Letter from LP to Carsten Steffens RE: LP thanks him for the update and will let him know of any worthwhile job opening that come to his attention. [Steffens letter to LP November 15, 1939] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #367, Folder #367.13]
- Letter from LP to Dr. Lewis S. Ramsdell RE: LP is glad to hear that Ramsdell's plans to next Spring are definite. LP suggests several research opportunities for when he arrives in May. Dear Dr. Ramsdell
I am glad to learn from your letter that your plans to come here next spring have now become definite. I shall probably be in the East between April 10 to May 15. If your plans involve your arriving here during that period, we would better make definite arrangements regarding your work in order that you would not lose time.
I have looked over your data on nesquehonite, without having had any inspiration. I notice that Fenoglio gives the impression that the point group symmetry must be holohedral because of the presence of two planes of symmetry on a Laue photograph. Since the Laue symmetry for all three orthorhombic crystal classes is the same, this observation does not show holohedry. Perhaps it will be necessary for you to consider hemihedral and hemimorphic space groups also. Moreover, even if the presence of one glide plane is indicated, the hemimorphic space group Pmn (or Pnm) would have to be considered, since it is not possible to say what the direction of the horizontal is for an orthorhombic crystal unless it shows good phase development corresponding to D2.
Very truly yours,
Linus Pauling

- Letter from LP to Roscoe H. Goodell RE: LP reassures Goodell that if his son is an able student he will do well at CIT and get a good job. [Goodell's letter November 19, 1939; Goodell's reply November 24, 1939] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #140, Folder #140.4]
- Letter from Ralph A. Beebe, Amherst College to LP RE: Beebe makes arrangements for LP to give the lecture series May 1, 2, 6 and 7 and also asks if he would like to lecture at Wesleyan College, Trinity College and Williams College as well while in the East.
