Dear Mr. Reynolds:
While talking with you today I made the statement that permanganate would not be used as a bleach in paper manufacture because of its much greater cost than bleaching powder. On looking through the literature I see that the use of permanganate has been suggested, and that it has been used in practice to a small extent. It is used in neutral or slightly alkaline solutions, followed by an acid treatment. The opinion of authorities seems to be that in most cases it does not offer any advantages sufficient to justify the increased cost.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
