The stibine complex arrived safely, but because of my absence from the laboratory for a month on a trip by car to Chicago and neighboring points it has not yet been photographed. My wife and I drove to meetings at Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago and then returned by way of the Black Hills, Yellowstone, and the Grand Teton National Park. We spend several days in the Teton's climbing, and enjoyed ourselves immensely, although after our final climb we were so stiff that we could not walk for a couple of days. We climbed up Cascade Canyon, intending to have a swim in Lake Solitude, but on arriving there found that the Lake was frozen over. We had planned to go over the Divide and down Paintbrush Canyon, but were stopped by snow on the switchback up the Cirque.
We are hard at work now on plans for getting our crystal structure and electron diffraction calculations made by machine, probably by a punched card machine.
The point you raise in your letter of May 23 regarding strain in the resonance hybrids of methylacetylene is well taken. Apparently the inhibiting effect of the strain is not great enough to eliminate phenomenon, however.
I think that Sutherland's low force constant for the central bond in diacetylene must be in error.
Since returning from Chicago I have not yet found out from Kossiakoff how the dibromohydrindene and tetralene work is coming along. We shall write

to you about it later. Kossiakoff is studying all of the five bromine compounds which you list.
Eyster's name is Eugene H. Eystsr, Physics Department, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. We saw him in Madison, and found that he was feeling all right, although of course the loss of a couple of fingers on the right hand is no small matter.
I am sorry that we had to reach the decision not to come to England this summer, and I hope that our European trip is not delayed indefinitely.
Sincerely yours,
LP/jr
