- Letter from Albert Schoenflies to LP RE: Schoenflies tells LP that it seems uncertain he will get a visa before his quota number comes up, it may even take up to several years. Although it would be hard to separate from the children, he would let them go only if he knew that they were under the protection and care of LP. Miss Lois Joyce
X-ray Laboratory
University of Illinois
Urbana, Illinois
Dear Miss Joyce:
I am sorry to say that it would not be possible for you to carry on work as a graduate student at this Institute. Women fellows are sometimes admitted for post-doctorate research, and there is a small chance that you could be given special permission to carry on research here, without working for a degree. If you want me to try to make this arrangement for you, please send a transcript of your record at Pittsburgh and Illinois, a statement as to the researches that you want to carry on, and information about the support of your work, as for example whether your Mellon Institute fellowship is to be continued.
I shall be away from Pasadena from June 14 to about July 10. If you come through Pasadena, you might talk over the situation with Professor R. G. Dickinson and J. H. Sturdivant.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
