Dr. Irving Langmuir
Research Laboratory
General Electric Company
1 River Road
Schenectady, New York
Dear Dr. Langmuir:
I am glad that you called to my attention the incorrect remarks which Dr. Niemaan and I had made in our paper regarding Bernal's statements. I was indeed aware that Bernal's statements were not accurate, and it was by accident that they were repeated nearly verbatim is our manuscript. This correction has now been made.
I think too that an experimental investigation of aldehyde ammonia is worth while, although it does not have much significance to the protein problem. There is no resonance energy involved here, and moreover the carbonyl bond energy in aldehyde is 3.5 kcal./mole less than in ketones and related substances. Consequently we would predict only 3 kcal./mole change in energy on formation of CH3HCOHNH2, and this value might well be further decreased by minor interactions within the molecule.
The principal reason which led Dr. Niemann and me to prepare our manuscript is that there has been a great deal of material published in support of the cyclol theory, and very little to support of the polypeptide chain theory. Dr. Niemann and I feel that the latter theory is right, and although we are unable at present to advance any rigorous argument in proof of this, it seemed worthwhile for us to state our beliefs.
I shall be on the lookout for the paper by Dr. Wrinch which is to appear soon in Nature.
The copy of the proof sheets of your Physical Society paper arrived yesterday, and I have read the paper with much interest. It seems
Dr. Irving Langmuir

to me that the phenomena of denaturation are not incompatible with the simple polypeptide for the globular proteins, as you say, but are instead accounted for in a reasonable way. I am enclosing a reprint of a paper by Dr. Mirsky and myself which discusses this matter.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Mr. Kenneth S. Pitzer
c/o Mr. John Mosher
Beaumont, California
Dear Dr. Pitzer:
I am pleased to inform you that the California Institute of Technology offers you appointment as Assistant Professor of Chemistry, with salary $2800 per year, paid in twelve equal monthly amounts. The appointment would take effect at the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1st, 1939, or at a later time before the opening of the school year in September 1939, according to your convenience.
The teaching duties associated with this appointment will consist at first in giving lectures in chemical engineering, two lectures weekly during the first term, and in applied chemistry, two lectures weekly throughout the year. In addition you would have supervision of the instrumental analysis laboratory, with the aid of teaching fellows, during the first term. It is possible that you might also help to some extent with the research manipulations laboratory, which is held one afternoon a week for one term.
It is anticipated that in a few years your teaching duties would be changed from applied chemistry to freshman chemistry.
The Institute has an arrangement with the Teacher's Insurance and Annuity Company, whereby a sum equal to 5% of the teacher's salary is paid by the Institute to this Company, provided that the teacher himself makes similar payments from his salary. This annuity scheme is optional with the teacher.
[page 2]
We would be glad to learn of your decision soon, in order that our plans for instruction during the coming year can be completed. I hope that you will come to Pasadena to talk with me before reaching a final decision. Perhaps you could bring Mrs. Pitzer with you for a visit here. I shall be at Corona del Mar on Saturday, May 20th, but shall be in Pasadena thereafter.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling, Chairman
Division of Chemistry and
Chemical Engineering

May 25, 1939
Mr. Lester L. Robinson, President
Filtrol Corporation
315 West Fifth Street
Los Angeles, California
Dear Mr. Robinson:
Professor Millikan has turned over to me the question of your establishing a fellowship at this Institute, discussed in your letter of May 16.
I have gone into the question with Professors Lacey and Badger, who were involved in the earlier discussion, and I now wish to suggest for your consideration [on] the following proposal.
It seems to me that from the scientific point of view the most interesting question connected with your work deals with the reason for the difference in properties and behavior of different clays of the same chemical composition after the acid treatment, and it is proposed that a fellowship be established to investigate this point and any other interesting questions that may arise during the course of the work. It seems to me not unlikely that the solution of this problem would ultimately be of considerable practical value also. The investigation would involve the study of the structure of untreated and treated clays, probably with extensive use of x-ray methods, as well as of other physical and chemical methods. We are well equipped with x-ray apparatus, and I have retained my interest in this field since carrying out my early work on the structure of the clay minerals.
The investigation would be carried out under the joint direction of Professor Richard M. Badger and myself. Professor Badger would supervise
[page 2]
that part of the research involving physical and colloid chemistry and I would supervise the x-ray work.
I believe that it is necessary for the success of the investigation that an able and well trained research fellow be appointed, rather than a graduate student. Because of the interest attached to carrying on work at the Institute, an able young man with the Ph.D. degree in chemistry would probably be willing to accept appointment as research fellow for a stipend of about $1800, which is of course less than the salary usually expected.
The sum required to carry on this work for one year is $3,000, to be expended as follows:
Institute charge for overhead $600
Salary of Ph.D. research fellow 1800
Apparatus and supplies 600
Total $3000
The item of $600 for apparatus and supplies would probably involve the construction of one or two special x-ray cameras in addition to incidental expenses.
The Institute policy in recent years in connection with fellowships of this type is to enter into a contract involving giving the Institute one half interest in patents resulting from the work. I suggest that this be the arrangement which you discuss with your Board of Directors. Professor Badger and I would also want permission to publish in scientific journals any results of scientific value as soon as possible after their examination with reference to the patent situation.
[page 3]
It would be desirable for an arrangement of this sort to be made for a two-year period, but we would be willing to accept the fellowship for one year.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling, Chairman
Division of Chemistry and
Chemical Engineering
LP/jr
