To: Professor Millikan
From: Professor Pauling
Dear Professor Millikan:
Professor Szent-Györgyi is a very distinguished man, having received the Nobel Prize for his work on vitamin C. It is our feeling that there is not a great chance that we would want to offer him a position in the Department, since his field of interest is really biochemical rather than organic. I understand, however, that he is considered to be a very interesting man and an unusually good lecturer and I think that it would be wise in connection with our policy of building up this field to extend this invitation to him. I hope that you can approve this expenditure from the Rockefeller Fund. I have already discussed the matter with Mr. Barrett.
