Dr. P. Nilakantan
Department of Physics
Indian Institute of Science
Hebbal, Bangalore
Dear Dr. Nilakantan:
I am glad to learn of your suggested explanation of the significant difference which found in the magnetic anisotropy of the nitrate and carbonate groups. Your observation is a very interesting one, and it seems not unlikely that your explanation, based on deformation in the electrostatic fields in the crystals, is correct. The problem of diamagnetic anisotropy is a difficult one to treat theoretically with accuracy, and I think that it is desirable that a large amount of experimental work be done in the field.
Sincerely yours,

Dr. David Harker
Department of Chemistry

Dear David:
The other day Weaver asked me if the new methods of treating x-ray data developed by Wrinch and Langmuir, and I replied that I did not know what contributions they had made in this field, since I have been unable to find anything in their papers which represented an advance over the work of previous investigators, and in particular of that of Patterson and you. Weaver then said that you were very enthusiastic about the Wrinch-Langmuir discovery. I have now re-read the article and letter published in Nature last fall, and I have not been able to find anything beyond what is contained or obviously implied in the work of other x-ray men. Have I overlooked some important idea in the mass of verbiage?
Albrecht and Corey have done a fine job in completing the glycine investigation, which should be published in the J.A.C.S. soon. Corey is now going on with the investigation of proteins themselves.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dr. A. L. Patterson
Bryn Mawr College
Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
Dear Patterson:
You have without doubt been pleased with the great success of your Fourier series, and you deserve the thanks of all of the active workers in the crystal structure field. I have the feeling that there is still more to be discovered along the lines of your last contribution, and I hope that you are continuing to think about the problem.
Albrecht and Corey have succeeded in making a complete structure determination of glycine, with extensive use of your series. Their paper will appear in the March or April J.A.C.S.
I saw in the program for the New York meeting of the American Physical Society your abstract in which you mention a demonstration that there is only one way in which a given set of atoms can produce a given F2 series. In Zeitschrift fur Kristallographie, 75, 128 (1930) Shappell and I stated that Wyckoff's positions 24e for space group Th7 gives the same values of F2 for positive and negative values of the parameter, which however correspond to the different atomic arrangements. I don't recall whether the presence of atoms in 8e is necessary in order that the physical arrangements be different. I would be glad to know if you find any flaw in this statement.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Professor J. L. Hoard
Department of Chemistry
Cornell University
Ithaca, New York
Dear Lynn:
Thanks for your letters regarding Nordsieck and Breckenridge.
Spitzer is getting along quite well here, and is, I think, a satisfactory graduate student.
I am glad to learn of your work on potassium hetafluocolumbate and the molybdenum cyanides. The only comparable work under way here is that of Helmholz, who has just finished determining the structure of Nd(BrO3)3•9H2O. He and a student named Rogers are also working on KIO2F2. Most of the crystal structure work here is now in the organic field, such as the amino acids.
Our house is almost completed. We may be able to move in a couple of weeks, and we are anxious to do it. The big wind which blew last week blew down about four trees in our yard on Arden Road but did not do any damage in Sierra Madre Villa, which is somewhat protected by the mountains.
With best regards to the Family, including Davy, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
