- Letter from F. R. Moulton, Permanent Secretary of the American Association for the Advancement of Science to J. Murray Luck, Secretary of the Pacific Division, cc: Veon C. Kiech, Secretary of the Southwestern Division RE: Moulton encloses financial reports to show Luck what type of funding they are working with and why the Pacific Division's allowance must be cut. He requests that Luck send detailed reports from his division as well so that a feasible solution to the problem at-hand might be devised. Dear Dr. Nilakantan:
I am glad to learn of your suggested explanation of the significant difference which found in the magnetic anisotropy of the nitrate and carbonate groups. Your observation is a very interesting one, and it seems not unlikely that your explanation, based on deformation in the electrostatic fields in the crystals, is correct. The problem of diamagnetic anisotropy is a difficult one to treat theoretically with accuracy, and I think that it is desirable that a large amount of experimental work be done in the field.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
