- Letter from LP to A. L. Patterson, Bryn Mawr College. [Patterson's reply to LP February 23, 1939] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #304, Folder #304.8]

Dr. A. L. Patterson
Bryn Mawr College
Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
Dear Patterson:
You have without doubt been pleased with the great success of your Fourier series, and you deserve the thanks of all of the active workers in the crystal structure field. I have the feeling that there is still more to be discovered along the lines of your last contribution, and I hope that you are continuing to think about the problem.
Albrecht and Corey have succeeded in making a complete structure determination of glycine, with extensive use of your series. Their paper will appear in the March or April J.A.C.S.
I saw in the program for the New York meeting of the American Physical Society your abstract in which you mention a demonstration that there is only one way in which a given set of atoms can produce a given F2 series. In Zeitschrift fur Kristallographie, 75, 128 (1930) Shappell and I stated that Wyckoff's positions 24e for space group Th7 gives the same values of F2 for positive and negative values of the parameter, which however correspond to the different atomic arrangements. I don't recall whether the presence of atoms in 8e is necessary in order that the physical arrangements be different. I would be glad to know if you find any flaw in this statement.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

- Letter from LP to A. R. Todd, University of Manchester RE: LP is glad Todd is happy at Manchester and will be glad to see him in England this summer. He thanks for his comments about Walker and asks what he thinks of Zechmeister. [Todd's letter to LP January 30, 1939] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #407, Folder #407.6]
- Letter from LP to David Harker, Johns Hopkins University RE: LP thanks Harker for pointing out what was "new" in the Wrinch-Langmuir work. LP also notes that he forgot Harker was working on the crystal structure of hemin and so told Hughes to work on it, but as he has now remembered, he will stop him. [LP's last letter to Harker February 6, 1939] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #151, Folder #151.10]
- Letter from LP to Dr. A. L. Patterson RE: LP is very pleased with the success of his Fourier series. Also, reports that Albrecht and Corey have succeeded in making a complete structure determination of glycine with extensive use of his series. An article will be published in the March or April issue of J. A. C. S. [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #304, Folder #304.8]
- Letter from LP to F. A. Gilfillan, Oregon State College RE: LP thinks that Emmett deserves an honorary degree from OSC. He also wonders whether OSC would have a position for Emmett. [Gilfillan's letter February 10, 1939; Gilfillan's reply February 20, 1939] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #136, Folder #136.10]
- Letter from LP to Professor A. R. Todd RE: Thanks Todd for his comments and advice regarding James Walker, LP is uncertain if he will be given serious consideration. LP asks for his candid opinion of the work of Zechmeister. [Todd's previous letter: January 30, 1939, Todd's response: March 15, 1939] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #407, Folder #407.6]
- Letter from Warren Weaver, Director, The Natural Sciences-Rockefeller Foundation to LP RE: Asks LP's opinion on whether the Foundation should provide funds for Coryell's research needs. [LP's reply February 20, 1939] [Filed under LP Science: Box #14.038, Folder #38.7]
