President James B Conant
Old Lyme, Connecticut
Dear Conant,
I am pleased to learn that you are interested in mentioning resonance in revising your text book of organic chemistry, and I have also been pleased to see from your letter that your understanding of the subject seems to be the same as mine. I would agree completely with the discussion which you gave in your letter of imidazole, urea, and the amides. You are right in saying that a molecule resonating among several valence bond structures retains one equilibrium configuration of the nuclei. Resonance is not identical with tautomerian; I would not say that two or three tautomeric forms of urea differing in the distribution of the hydrogen atoms, were to be combined together in a resonating structure.
Probably one reason for the confusion of resonance and tautomerism in the minds of some chemists results from the fact that often the valence bond structures among which a molecule resonates are similar to the valence bond structure usually written for the individual tautomers. In the case of urea the tautomeric form with no hydrogen on oxygen is usually assigned a valence bond structure with a carbon-oxygen double bond, and the forms in which a hydrogen atom has been transferred from nitrogen to oxygen are assigned structures with a carbon-nitrogen double bond. From the point of view of resonance each of these tautomeric forms is considered to be a normal state to which all of these structures contribute, the greatest contribution in each case being made by the structure which is conventionally assigned to the tautomer. The same resonance occurs when hydrogen is replaced by methyl groups as you mentioned in your letter in
President James B. Conant 2 September 2, 1938
connection with imidazole; the methyl groups probably tend to stabilize the conventional valence bond structure somewhat, however, so that the conventional structure becomes somewhat more important for methylated compounds than for those containing hydrogen. In the case of the carboxyl group, for example, I would estimate about 50-50 percent for the chances of the double bond in the two positions for the ion, about 60-40 for the acid, and about 70-30 for the ester.
My wife and I have been busy this summer with an architect preparing plans for a house which we hope to have built during the fall. We have purchased a tract of 2.1 acres at the foot of Mount Wilson, between Altadena and Sierra Madre. The tract Is located above an arroyo, and has a fine view of the arroyo, the mountains and the valley to the south. It has on it several live oak and eucalyptus trees so that our planting is partially taken care of. It will be a change for me to have to drive to the Institute after having lived across the street for eight years, but the five miles on good roads can be covered in ten or twelve minutes, so that I do not expect to lose much time
With kindest regards to Mrs. Conant,
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Professor Thorfin Hogness
Department of Chemistry
University of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois
Dear Thorfin:
I have a man, John N. Wilson, working on the theory and practice of chromatographic analysis. I remembered that a student with you was carrying on similar work a couple of years ago but I have forgotten his name. Could you tell me whether an account of his work was published, and if not, whether a dissertation or other report is available?
We are trying to develop the chromatographic technique for the purpose of separating mixtures of amino acids and peptides.
I trust that you have been having a good time in Michigan. We have been hard at work on plans for our new house, and now the contractors are getting ready to put in their bids for its construction.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Mr. James S. Thompson
McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc.
330 West 42nd Street
New York, N.Y.
After reading Rice's manuscript, I have formed the following opinion of it.
The field covered is an interesting and important one, and the author is an able man, familiar with the field. It is my opinion, however, that his treatment of the physical basis of valence theory, given in the first ten chapters (206 pages), is not satisfactory, for reasons given in the following paragraph. The remaining chapters, XI to XIX (355 pages), are, I believe, more satisfactory.
In the first ten chapters the author attempts to cover a very wide and difficult field. He does not adopt a consistent point of view, his treatment being in part too mathematical and in part too elementary. There is no consecutive development of any theory or subject; arguments are based almost at random on classical theory, old quantum theory, and quantum mechanics. The author has shown ingenuity in his discussion of wave mechanics without the Schrödinger wave equation; this discussion is very arbitrary, however, and I fear that no reader would follow it or get a correct picture of quantum mechanics from it. Moreover, the treatment is not consistent; for example, the important argument on page 179 involves the properties of the wave equation, introduced here without discussion. The reader would surely be lost here.
It seems likely that the manuscript could be made the basis of a satisfactory course taught by Dr. Rice himself, but that another teacher, without his ability and knowledge, would have difficulty with it. I doubt that minor revisions of the first ten chapters would change the situation. These chapters might be completely rewritten to give them greater unity, consecutiveness, and clarity. Or it might be possible for the author to replace them by a briefer treatment covering only the material needed as the basis for the succeeding chapters, omitting elementary topics which the reader might be expected to know (such as Chapters I and II) and advanced topics which are not essential to the later chapters (wave mechanical calculations, etc.)
Chapters XI to XIX seem to me to be good in general. They are marred by occasional lack of clarity and by errors in fact and in English. I enclose an incomplete list of suggested changes (in addition many obvious errors in spelling and punctuation have been corrected in the manuscript). These chapters need to be gone over carefully before printing.
I am returning the manuscript separately. I would be glad to discuss it further with you, if you desire.
Yours truly,
Linus Pauling

Professor J. Papish
Department of Chemistry
Cornell University
Ithaca, New York
Dear Professor Papish:
Over two and one-half months ago I sent to Dr. Hughes the manuscript of my book on the "Nature of the Chemical Bond". Dr. Hughes
went through the manuscript and turned it over to the Press before
leaving Ithaca at the beginning of July. As you know, I have been
planning to use the book as a text in our graduate course here this
year.
Although Dr. Hughes told me that there might be a slight delay because of Mr. Schaeffer's injury, I have assumed that the book was being set up by the printer and that we would have copies for our students available early this fall. However, when the whole summer went by and the galley proof was not sent on to me, I wrote to you and Mr. Schaeffer to inquire about the progress of the printing. I have now received a letter from Mr. Schaeffer in which he says that he could not proceed with publishing the book during the summer because approval of publication had not been given by the Committee on Publication and that he is still holding up the printing until this Committee meets.
In order to make the quality of the book as high as possible, I included in the manuscript much material beyond that given in the Cornell lectures, and I worked hard last spring to get the manuscript finished in time for publication for use during the coming academic year. I feel that the delay of two and one-half months or more in publication
Profossor J. Papish
September 18, 1938
because of the failure of the Committee on Publication to approve the
manuscript is inexcusable. If I had known at the beginning of summer
that this delay was contemplated I might have done something about it.
I know that there is no way to make up for the two and one-half months
which hare been lost, but I would like to ask you to do everything possible
to speed up the printing, in order that the-book may be available for
use here as early as possible in the year.
Yours truly,
Linus Pauling
