Dear Warren:
I am pleased to learn from your letter of June 2nd that it is probable that the section of your Executive Committee will release funds for the year 1938-1939 up to $70,000.00. In preparing our budget for next year we had great difficulty in estimating the amounts which would be needed for the first years work, and it will be convenient for us to have some leeway in regard to the sums expended. The present estimates are unchanged and indicate that approximately $60,000 will be needed.
We are now nicely settled in the new Crellin Laboratory, and our work is progressing very satisfactorily. I have decided to make an intensive attack on the problem of the separation of amino acids and polypeptides in protein hydrolysates, and we have begun a thorough investigation of the possibility of using the chromatographic technique in this work.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
