- Letter from LP to Howard. [Filed under: H: Correspondence, Box #165.2]
June 2, 1937
Dear Howard:
Could you give me an estimate, as detailed as you can make it, of the following items:
(1) The cost of all equipment except permanent furniture such as chemical desks and hoods for organic research as we are contemplating it, for 4 professors including yourself, 3 or 4 men such as Koepfli, National Research Fellows, etc., and about 10 new graduate students. Please put individual items such as centrifuges, microbalances, etc., as far as possible.
(2) The annual cost of chemicals and supplies for this group assuming that extensive researches are to be carried out on biological substances. I suppose the cost of solvents, for example, would be appreciable.
(3) The cost of all organic books that we should have to bring our library into first class shape in this regard. Should we have any additional journals also?
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling.

June 8, 1937
Dr. Lynn Hoard
110 College Avenue
Ithaca, New York
Dear Lynn:
Your letter has waited a month for answering, because of various demands on my time. I have no special desires regarding books, other than the usual crystal structure books including Strukturberichte 1, 2, and 3. My lectures probably will not require the use of many crystal models. I should, however, be glad to have on my desk a 20-inch slide rule, and I should also like very much to have available for the exclusive use of Jack Sherman, who will probably come with me, an electric calculating machine, preferably either a new automatic Marchand or Monroe. Your department might well consider this expenditure of around six hundred dollars unjustified, however, and we would be satisfied if a machine were available for us part of the time.
The Crellin Laboratory is similar to Gates and is located on the west side of the library unit. It will have five stories, three as in Gates, and a third floor in place of attic and a sub-basement. Concrete has been poured up to the floor of the first floor. A biology building and two geology buildings, completing the borders of the planned reflecting pool, are also being built.
We have a new baby boy, born on June 4. So far he has not been named.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

I am afraid that I shall have to withdraw my invitation to stay with us as a house guest. We have a new baby in the family, born last week, and my wife's health has not been as good as usual, so that it seems wise for us to live as simple a life as possible during the next few weeks. I am sure that pleasant quarters are available at the Athenaeum, and if you would write to me as soon as you learn exactly when you are to arrive here, I shall reserve a room for you there. If you come by train from the North, please let me know the time of your arrival so that I can meet the train at Glendale.
Sincerely yours,

Professor Arthur B. Lamb, Editor
Journal of the American Chemical Society
Chemical Laboratory of Harvard University
12 Oxford Street
Cambridge, Mass.
Dear Professor Lamb:
In recommending that Tables XV to XVIII in the manuscript of Giauque and Kemp be omitted, I was actuated to a considerable extent by the belief that the calculations underlying them were not extremely extensive and that the tables contained errors. Now that Professor Giauque has pointed out that this belief was wrong and that it rested on a mistake in the manuscript in connection with Equation 14, I withdraw my earlier recommendation, and recommend instead that the manuscript be accepted for publication, after Professor Giauque has made the corrections which he mentions in his letter. I believe that it would be satisfactory to omit Table III and to replace tables X, XI, and XVI by summaries, as suggested by Professor Giauque.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

June 29, 1937
Dr. E. Bright Wilson, Jr.
12 Oxford Street
Cambridge, Massachusetts
Dear Bright:
I am sorry to not to be able to come to Rochester for your big occasion. Stitt, too, seems to think that he can't get away quite that early, but he may change his mind.
Helen and I thank you and Emily for your congratulations. The baby is getting along very well. At present he is the only child in the house, Peter and Linda being at Corona del Mar for a two weeks' vacation with Lola and Linus at Catalina with the Boy Scouts.
It is fine that you have two National Research Fellows to work with you next year, and I am sure that you will make much progress with your large group of research men.
I haven't any explanation for the low distance in formaldehyde. For several months I have been trying to get Brockway to photograph it, and he once promised to do so before leaving. Have Dieke and Kisty done heavy formaldehyde? The old formaldehyde C-O distance can be brought up to around 1.22 by varying the C-H distance suitably.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
