April 5, 1937
Dr. John Arthur Wilson
757 North Broadway
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Dear Dr. Wilson:
There is in existence a good bit of evidence that ammonium compounds such as ammonium chloride involve no sharing of electrons between nitrogen and the chloride ion. For example, in crystalline ammonium chloride it is known that the four chlorine atoms are arranged tetrahedrally around nitrogen and that the chlorine atom is no closer to one nitrogen atom than to any one of seven others, the eight being all too far away to permit formation of a shared electron pair bond with nitrogen. I am sure that you would find these questions discussed in Lewis' book or in Sidgwick's book ("The Electronic Theory of Valency", Oxford) in a satisfactory manner.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

- Letter from LP to Professor J. H. Van Vleck, Harvard University, RE: LP does not believe that knows enough to discuss the points mentioned in his previous letter. It does seem to him that the magnetic and electric cases may be much different for the reason that a magnetic dipole atom in a paramagnetic substance may be spherically symmetrical so far as electron distribution is concerned, and electric dipole molecules can never show spherical symmetry. April 19, 1937
Mr. Morris Miller
65 Carrington Avenue
Providence, Rhode Island
Dear Mr. Miller:
I think that your idea of using the inner electrons of carbon to complete the valence [s]hell in carbon monoxide is not a bad one. A similar suggestion was made in regard to some other substances about fifteen years ago by Professor Eastman of the University of California. Since then our ideas regarding the structure of molecules have developed to such an extent that it is now possible to say definitely that the inner electrons in carbon monoxide stay inside and do not come up into the valence shell. If you continue to study chemistry, you will probably learn in an advanced course in college what the structure of carbon monoxide is and how we now account for its peculiar properties.
I can not tell from reading your letter whether it would be wise for you to plan to prepare yourself for a scientific career or not. You seem to be interested in chemistry; if you stand at the top of your classes in scientific courses in school, and if you keep up your interest in scientific work, I would think that you might look forward to becoming a professional scientist. On the other hand, if your scholastic record is not outstanding, perhaps you should look forward to working in some less strongly competitive field.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

April 30, 1937
Dr. Carl Niemann
The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research
New York, New York
Dear Dr. Niemann:
I have heard from Dr. Hanson that the Rockefeller Foundation will probably grant you a Foundation Fellowship for twelve months beginning July 1. The program suggested, involving in the main study with Harrington, seems to me to be thoroughly satisfactory, in addition, I think that you should visit as many of the good organic chemists abroad as possible, inasmuch as personal contact and acquaintance are very valuable.
Dr. Hanson has asked if you could use the $1000 travel fund for your wife's travel and for your own travel in Europe, the Foundation paying for your travel from New York to England and return to Pasadena, and I have answered that this would be allowed. To you I would suggest that the Institute provide stipend and travel expenses sufficient to bring the total amount which you receive during the twelve months period up to that arranged for by Professor Millikan. I believe that this could be accomplished in any way that you desire. For example, the Institute might make twelve monthly payments to you of $100, and then on your return to Pasadena make a final payment, its magnitude being determined by the amount which you receive from the Foundation for your travel. If this is satisfactory to you or if you have some alternative to suggest, please let me know.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
