Dr. Carl Niemann
The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research
New York, New York
Dear Dr. Niemann:
I have heard from Dr. Hanson that the Rockefeller Foundation will probably grant you a Foundation Fellowship for twelve months beginning July 1. The program suggested, involving in the main study with Harrington, seems to me to be thoroughly satisfactory, in addition, I think that you should visit as many of the good organic chemists abroad as possible, inasmuch as personal contact and acquaintance are very valuable.
Dr. Hanson has asked if you could use the $1000 travel fund for your wife's travel and for your own travel in Europe, the Foundation paying for your travel from New York to England and return to Pasadena, and I have answered that this would be allowed. To you I would suggest that the Institute provide stipend and travel expenses sufficient to bring the total amount which you receive during the twelve months period up to that arranged for by Professor Millikan. I believe that this could be accomplished in any way that you desire. For example, the Institute might make twelve monthly payments to you of $100, and then on your return to Pasadena make a final payment, its magnitude being determined by the amount which you receive from the Foundation for your travel. If this is satisfactory to you or if you have some alternative to suggest, please let me know.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

- Letter from LP to Dr. W. Everett Land RE: LP is glad to learn that he desires to pursue and interest in quantum mechanics and hopes that Land will find it possible to study at CIT. LP regrets to say that he does not believe there are any grants or fellowships remaining. [Filed under: L: Correspondence, Box #230.3]
- Letter from LP to Frank Blair Hanson, The Rockefeller Foundation RE: LP thinks the terms of the fellowship arrangement for Dr. Niemann suggested in Hanson's letter of April 23, 1937 are entirely satisfactory. LP thinks it would be best for Niemann to work with Harrington in London and that he should visit as many leading organic chemists abroad as he as the opportunity to do so. - Letter from Robert B. Corey to LP RE: Due to the readjustments of in the administration at Rockefeller Institute he has been offered a fellowship for the coming year to be used in any institution where he can continue crystal structure studies. Asks if it would be possible for him to spend the coming year as a worker in LP's laboratory. [Filed under C: Individual Correspondence: Box #67.5, file: (Corey, Robert B. 1937-1971)]
