September 3, 1936
Dr. K. Lark Horovitz
Department of Physics
Purdue University
Lafayette, Indiana
Dear Dr. Horovitz
The main reason for my failure to accept the sigma of the electron cloud as the explanation of your observed intensity anomaly in the electron diffraction pattern of ZnO is that we and others have found from x-ray experience that effects of this type are in all cases very small, the most pronounced effect being shown by the reflection (222) of diamond. I do not have any alternative explanation to offer to yours, however, and I am looking forward to discussing the phenomenon with Dr. Yearian when he arrives here later this month. I am very glad that Dr. Yearian is to be here during the coming year.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

c/o The Rockefeller Foundation
49 West 49th Street
New York, New York
Dear Dr. Wrinch
I had already sent a copy of our protein paper to you at Oxford, and I am sending another to the Rockefeller Foundation in case that your interest happens to be ken enough to cause you to read it in this country.
I should like very much to talk with you about proteins, but I shall not be in the East this fall. If it does turn out that you are able to make the trip across the country I trust that you will plan to spend some time in Pasadena.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

September 17, 1936
Mr. Richard Dodson
Brashear, Mo.
Dear Dodson:
I returned your three books to Catherine MacMillan, who fell on my neck on seeing them again, and promised that she would erase the hard thoughts about you that she had been having.
Coryell is going to ship your pipes to you today. He will try first to get the Institute to pay the postage, and if he is unsuccessful he will tap me for the rest of the dollar. I think that he is even hoping to get Mrs. Lassettre to wrap them up.
I expect that you have heard about the drowning of Emerson Green in Michigan. It is surely terrible that such a fine fellow should have lost his life.
I have remembered you to Coryell who also remembered you to me.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

- Letter from LP to Dr. Egon Wiberg. [Filed under: W: Correspondence, Box #443.3]
September 21, 1936
Dr. Egon Wiberg
Technischen Hochschule Krlsruhe
Karlsruhe, Germany
Dear Dr. Wiberg:
I am glad to inform you that we have finally obtained a little more direct evidence regarding the nature of the boron hydrides. Dr. Bauer and I have completed the electron diffraction investigation of B5H9, which was found to have the structure shown below.
[diagram of structure]
The whole molecule is coplanar, the boron-boron distances being about 1.76 A., which is only slightly smaller than the single bond separation, and the boron-hydrogen distance being about 1.18 A., the single bond valence. Our paper will be published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society in a couple of months. I am not sure as to what the electronic structure corresponding to this atomic configuration is, but a reasonable structure can be written in which each boron is attached to other borons by electron pair bonds and to hydrogen atoms by either electron pair bonds or one electron bonds, there being four of the latter.
Sincerely yours
Linus Pauling

Dr. Gerald Wendt, Editor
Box 516, Grand Central Annex
New York, New York
Dear Dr. Wendt:
I agree that it is not necessary to have any referee other than the chairman of the symposium look over the manuscripts for the December issue.
The suggestion that a photograph of Professor Debye be printed as a frontispiece to this issue seems to me to be an excellent one, and I recommend that this be done. Professor Debye's work on dipole molecules was a great contribution to chemistry, which, I feel, has not been any too well acknowledged.
Sincerely yours,
