Dear Dr. Horovitz
The main reason for my failure to accept the sigma of the electron cloud as the explanation of your observed intensity anomaly in the electron diffraction pattern of ZnO is that we and others have found from x-ray experience that effects of this type are in all cases very small, the most pronounced effect being shown by the reflection (222) of diamond. I do not have any alternative explanation to offer to yours, however, and I am looking forward to discussing the phenomenon with Dr. Yearian when he arrives here later this month. I am very glad that Dr. Yearian is to be here during the coming year.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
