Dear Dr. Herman:
I was much interested to read the editorial in Metal Process about your spectrographic work, and indeed to learn of the existence of the method of analysis. The writer of the editorial has without doubt laid himself open to the charge of having made a public statement about something about which his information is far from complete, and I feel that you are justified in being made indignant. On the other hand, I myself have had little practical spectrograph experience, and in particular I have not had the opportunity of seeing the applied research spectrograph which you use. I am leaving on Friday for the East, and I have been so busy as to have been prevented from calling on you in order to learn more about the method. For this reason I feel that it is not wise for me to write directly to the editor of Metal Progress at this time. I would be interested to know what the outcome of your discussion with him is.
With personal greetings, I am
Very truly yours,
Linus Pauling
