Department of Chemistry

Princeton, New Jersey.
Dear Henry:
The Institute is without any funds at all for fellowships for Ph.Ds's, so that there is nothing than can be done for Hirschfelder in this regard. On the other hand, I have a research fund which can be used in particular for hiring research assistants, and if nothing else is available for Hirschfelder for next year, it might be possible to work with him on that. Because of the nature of the fund, it would be necessary for him to devote the larger fraction of his time to some problem of interest to us rather than necessarily to him, but he would be able to put in some of his time on his own work. The stipend would also not be very large. However, I do not want to be too optimistic regarding this, inasmuch as the funds are, to a large extent, earmarked for work of a particular type, and I cannot tell yet whether there will be any residue which can be used for theoretical work on the structure of molecules. I think that it will not be possible to make plans for next year until March. If Hirschfelder has not made some satisfactory arrangement by that time, he might well write to me in order to see what the situation is. Thanks very much for letting me know that he is looking for something,
With best wishes for the new year, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
