Dear Professor Lamb:
My own opinion that the magneto-optic effect is a real (though illusory) phenomenon cannot be justified by any set of experiments described in the literature or by any theoretical arguments (since the nature of the effect is not known). Holding this opinion, I favor publication of the Sommer-Allison communication, for reasons which, insofar as they are concrete enough to be stated, are essentially expressed in the third paragraph of your letter to me.
