Nov. 16, 1933
Dear Fred:
The 70 mm of xenon was the pressure in mm of mercury, the volume of the system being 300 or 400 cc. Hence there was plenty of xenon present. Yost should have mentioned the volume. We still have the xenon, but Yost would like to make another try at preparing a compound (unless you want the xenon returned soon). I still think XF6 should be stable.
I wish to offer my congratulations and best wishes on the impending event. We are still satisfied with three little roughnecks.
My work is going on as usual. We are doing a good bit of electron diffraction work. If you prepare any new or unusual compounds, I hope you will remember that we are on the lookout for substances to study with x-rays or electrons.
I hope to be able to stop at Purdue sometime. At present I have no plans for a trip East, expect possibly to the Nat. Acad. next April.
Sincerely,
Linus Pauling

November 22, 1933
Dear Dr. Noyes:
I find that there exists a discrepancy of about $1000 between the funds for our work which I had estimated to be available and the funds actually available.
When I talked with you last month about the new spectrograph I used as a basis of discussion the funds available on May 26 together with an estimate of expenditures, inasmuch as I had no account of requisitions on the Crellin and Rockefeller funds. On this basis, there should be on hand funds, for all work planned (spectrograph, high potential source, spectrometer) and about $1200.
Actually the sum is about $0 -$100. Mr. Barrett gave me $857.61 as the amount in the Rockefeller Fund on November 14th. About $800 is still needed for the high potential source.
I do not know where the discrepant $1000-$1200 has gone. If I could examine

Prof. Arthur B. Lamb,
Harvard University,
Cambridge, Mass.
Dear Professor Lamb:
Dr. Van Rysselbergh’s note presents an interesting treatment of the carbon atom. Its significance is not at all clear, however; I suggest that Dr. Van Rysselbergh be encouraged to withhold publication until a more detailed paper has been prepared, in which the effect of spin, the extension to more complicated atoms (involving d-orbitals), and the physical or chemical interpretation are discussed. Van Vleck’s papers on methane ion the Journal of Chemical Physics should not be ignored in any treatment of the tetrahedral carbon atom.
Very truly yours,
Linus Pauling
