Linus Pauling: In 1931 I published a paper about the three-electron bond and included, I guess it wasn't in that paper but when I was up at Berkeley giving my lectures as I did every spring, I said that there should be an ion, a radical, a super-oxide radical. I didn't say exactly that but I said there should be this radical and I said what should it be called. And by that time we had shown that it existed by measure, we had measured the magnetic susceptibility of a substance called potassium tetraoxide, K₂O₄, and shown that it really was KO₂. At any rate, Bray, the same Bray I have mentioned and Ermon Eastman, whom I haven't mentioned, each said that it ought to be called super-oxide, so we called it super-oxide radical.
