Letter from Linus Pauling to Warren Weaver. August 18, 1944. Pauling writes to propose that, once the war reaches its end, the Rockefeller Foundation consider funding a large research
project devoted to determining the structure of proteins. Pauling notes that Caltech already has a well-established equipment
infrastructure for such an undertaking, but lacks the labor power necessary to adequately analyze large numbers of electron
diffraction patterns. Pauling feels that, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, a staff of perhaps twenty additional
full-time assistants could make significant headway in determining a sizeable number of protein structures.
