Finding Books in Online Catalogs

The OSU Libraries Catalog is a listing of materials owned by OSU Libraries. It can be used to find books related to animal science. The catalog uses the Library of Congress authorized subject headings. In addition to headings such as Animal breeding, Animal feeding, Animal genetics, Animal nutrition, headings are used for domestic species, e.g., Cattle, Beef cattle, Dairy cattle, Sheep, etc. More information can be found by consulting the list of authorized headings which is available in The Valley Library.

Finding Articles in Journals

Basic searching

Academic Search Premier (1975 - present).
Indexes about 4500 publications including general interest magazines, scientific journals and some newspapers. Article summaries are included and many articles are full-text. Useful for finding information on current issues in the news media.

Comprehensive searching

AGRICOLA (1970 - present)
This database indexes the agricultural research of the United States as well as some international agricultural research. Contains citations to journal articles (many with abstracts), government publications, technical reports, and conference proceedings. Some articles not in English.

CAB Abstracts (1973 - present)
Covers all areas of worldwide agricultural literature, much in foreign languages. Contains citations to journal articles, government publications, monographs, and conference proceedings, most with abstracts. Subject headings are listed in the CAB Thesaurus which is accessible in the database. CAB Abstracts is also published in several subject specific sections which are listed below.

Animal Breeding Abstracts - see CAB Abstracts
SF1 .A6 (Paper format 1933-1991)
Indexes international literature on animal breeding. Includes livestock, poultry, fur-bearing animals, laboratory animal, other animals, and fish.

Dairy Science Abstracts - see CAB Abstracts
SF221 .D19 (Paper format 1939-1991)
Indexes international literature on dairy husbandry and milk production, including nutrition, microbiology.

Poultry Abstracts - see CAB Abstracts
SF481 .P305 (Paper format 1975-1991)
Indexes international literature in poultry science. Covers all aspects of poultry husbandry and medicine.

Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews, Series B: Livestock Feeds and Feeding - see CAB Abstracts
REF QP141 .N8 Ser.B (Paper format 1977-1991)
Continues Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews (REF QP 141 .N8, 1931-1976). Includes international literature on livestock feeding and feed technology, feed composition, and diet in the etiology of disease.

Index Veterinarius - see CAB Abstracts
Z6674 .I5 (Paper format 1933-1991)
Indexes international veterinary literature. Many citations are entered under one subject heading only. Items listed in Index Veterinarius for which there is a corresponding abstract in the Veterinary Bulletin are marked with the abstract number from the latter.

Veterinary Bulletin - see CAB Abstracts
SF601 V35 (Paper format 1931-1991)
Indexes worldwide veterinary and related literature. Veterinary Bulletin is more selective than Index Veterinarius and lists slightly more than one-third of the same items.

Biological Abstracts/BIOSIS (1991 - present)
The world's major indexing service for biological information in research journals. Contains information on all aspects of biology, including biochemistry, endocrinology, genetics, microbiology, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology. Due to the way this index is designed, subject terms should be searched in article titles and abstract fields and not limited to the descriptor fields.

Biological Abstracts: Reports, Reviews and Meetings (RRM)
Companion to Biological Abstracts, this index provides international coverage of biological information in conference proceedings, new books, review journals, and many other kinds of publications. Indexed by subject, author, systematic names, concepts, and article title words.

Provides electronic searching of Chemical Abstracts (CA), the CAS Registry File, MEDLINE, and CAS React. As the primary abstracting service for chemical information, Chemical Abstracts provides international coverage of: journals, books, symposia, meetings and patents. SciFinder is only available to OSU users. It is available on computers in the Valley Library Information Commons. Searching from other computers requires installation of software. MEDLINE (1950s - present)
Database produced by the National Library of Medicine. Comprehensive indexing of clinical medicine, but also includes basic research in biochemistry, endocrinology, genetics, microbiology, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology.

Science Citation Index -- Available via the web (1996 - present)

Indexes approximately 5,000 journals from various scientific disciplines. Represents core Life science journals defined as those most often cited in research articles. Searchable by author, article title word, journal name, cited author, and cited journal name.

This provides access to the complete range of academic subjects appearing in dissertations accepted at accredited institutions.
Indexing of dissertations: 1861-
Abstracting of dissertations: 1980-
Abstracting of theses: 1988-

Current Awareness Services

These services are designed to cover the gap between today and when articles are listed in the indexing and abstracting services described above. However, access may be only via article title words or scanning title pages, and there are usually no abstracts.

ingenta is a database of recent articles from many thousands of journals. ingenta Research Alerts is an automated alerting service that delivers the tables-of-contents of journals via e-mail.

Government Publications in Agriculture

GPO Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications
Lists many documents published by the federal government, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Valley Library has a large number of federal documents in the collection. Some are shelved in Government Documents. Others have been cataloged with Library of Congress call numbers and are located on various floors of the library. Search the library catalog to find the location of a document.
