Accessing Google Scholar from Off Campus

Why should I configure Google Scholar to connect to the OSU Library website?

In many cases, links to full text are through subscription sources. The library subscribes to many of these sources. If you use the library link to Google Scholar, you may be able to access subscriptions already paid for by the library. If you are off campus, you will be prompted for your OSU ID number. If you do not use the library link for off campus access, many of these full text sources will ask for payment.

How can I configure Google Scholar to connect with things OSU Libraries pays for from off-campus?

Note: If you're using Google Scholar from a library workstation or any other on-campus computer, the "Get this Item at OSU" link will display automatically without any special configuration.

To identify yourself as an OSU affiliate, click the Scholar Preferences link next to the search box. You should end up here:
Google Scholar Library Links

If Oregon State University Libraries box isn't already checked, in the Library Links search box, type Oregon State University and click Find Library. This should result in a "Oregon State University (Get this Item at OSU)" checkbox.
Google Scholar Add a Library

Now, when you run searches in Google Scholar, you should see "Get this Item at OSU" alongside many of the results:
Google Scholar with Get this Item at OSU

If you click a "Get this Item at OSU" link, the library's Get this Item service will attempt to find the full text of the article in the library's online collections. You'll see a screen like this:
Get this Item at OSU

Please note that, even if you don't see a "Get this Item at OSU" link next to an article, it doesn't mean that we don't have it! The OSU Libraries has access to tens of thousands of journals online and in print, and not all of them are accessible through the Get this Item link. If you need help locating a particular article that you found through Google Scholar, please ask a librarian.
