Instructions for Off-Campus Access to SciFinder Scholar

  1. Sign up for an ONID account
  2. Download and install SciFinder Software on your desktop
  3. Download and install OSU Virtual Private Network software on your desktop.
  4. Configure your OSU VPN software
  5. Configure your browser for the OSU Libraries proxy server
• Running SciFinder Scholar from your desktop.
  1. Connect to the internet via your internet provider
  2. Launch your VPN software, and login to the OSU VPN
  3. Launch SciFinder Scholar Software
  4. Exit Scifinder Scholar
  5. Disconnect from OSU's Virtual Private Network

Setting up your computer for off-campus access to Scifinder Scholar

1. Sign up for ONID by following the instructions on the ONID website. For help, contact the OSU Computer Helpdesk at 541-737-3474 or .
2. Download and install SciFinder Software on your desktop by following the instructions on the OSU Libraries SciFinder Scholar Access page.
3. Download and install VPN software:
   
   1. VPN software for Windows is available for download at http://www.net.oregonstate.edu/vpn/vpn-detail.php#SDS_FOR_WINDOWS.
   2. Under "Get the Cisco VPN client version 4.0.2.A", click "Download using your ONID username/password":
      
   3. When prompted, enter your ONID account user name and password.
   4. Once you are authenticated, you will be asked what you want to do with the file you're about to download. Select Save.
      
   5. When asked how to save the file, note the name of the file (vpnclient-win-current.exe) and the folder in which the file is being saved. The VPN client software will take about 30 minutes to download at 36.6 kbps.
      
   6. When download is complete, open the folder that contains the file vpnclient-win-current.exe and double click the file. When the WinZip self-extractor window appears, note the location of the folder where the unzipped file will be placed. Click the Unzip button. Close the WinZip self-extractor window after it has finished.
      
   7. Open the folder that contains the unzipped vpn files and double click Setup.exe:
      
   8. Follow the instructions in the Cisco VPN Client setup program. When you are prompted to choose a destination location, accept the default location suggested by the program:
      
   9. Continue to accept defaults suggested by the program. When the install wizard is complete, shut down all programs and restart your computer by clicking the finish button:
      
4. Configure your OSU VPN software:
   
   
   1. Find the Cisco Systems VPN Client software icon in your Start, Programs menu.
      
   2. Open the VPN Dialer. When the Cisco Systems VPN Client window pops up, click New...
      
   3. In the Create New VPN Connection Entry window, give a name to the connection entry, and enter an optional description (assign your own, or use the ones in the image below):
      
   4. Under Host, enter sds.OREGONSTATE.EDU
      
   5. Click the Group Authentication radio button.

      Name: ORST_SCIFIND
      Password: NewService

      
   6. Click the "Transport" tab
   7. Click on the radio button for "Use IPSec over TCP", then click "Save".
      
5. You have completed the configuration of your VPN software.

Running SciFinder Scholar from your desktop

Now that your VPN software is correctly installed and configured, you will need to follow these steps each time you connect to SciFinder Scholar.

1. Connect to the internet via your internet provider
2. Launch your VPN software, and login to the OSU VPN:
   
   
   1. Open your VPN software from the Start, Programs menu. Click the Connect button.
      
   2. Log in to the OSU Virtual Private Network using you ONID username and password:
      
   3. Upon authenication, you see the following window:
      
   4. To finalize your connection to the VPN, click Continue. The connection will be complete when the VPN Client window disappears from your screen.
3. Launch SciFinder Scholar by clicking Start, Programs, SciFinder Scholar 2007, SciFinder Scholar. For more information about searching SciFinder Scholar, see Introduction to SciFinder Scholar 2007.
4. When you have completed your SciFinder Scholar search, exit the SciFinder program...
   
5. ... and disconnect from the OSU Virtual Private Network.
