Outcome 1: Assignment #1A

After reading the requirements for the argument paper assignment, the student will identify a topic area that they can develop through further exploration. The topic should be broad enough to support further exploration, potentially arguable, and something in which the student is interested.

  • Performance indicator: The information literate student defines and articulates the need for information.
(ACRL Standard I, Performance indicator 1)
  • ACRL Outcome: Confers with instructors and participates in class discussions, peer workgroups, and electronic discussions to identify a research topic, or other information need.
  • WR 121 Outcome: After being introduced to the research paper assignment, the student articulates a topic area to be developed through further exploration in a written paragraph.

Outcome 2: Assignment 1B

The student will select appropriate general information sources, and examine those sources for additional information about the topic area.

  • Performance indicator: The information literate student defines and articulates the need for information.
(ACRL Standard I, Performance Indicator 1)
  • ACRL Outcome: Explores general information sources to increase familiarity with the topic.
  • WR 121 Outcome:
    • After examining the result list of a simple keyword search about a topic in Metafind, the student points out key words and phrases found in the literature about that topic.
    • After examining the result list of a simple keyword search about a topic in Google, the student points out key words and phrases found in the literature about that topic.
    • After learning about Metafind, and doing a simple keyword search on their topic, the student will infer where they will be the most successful in finding information on their topic (by searching in books, academic journals, or magazines and newspapers).

Outcome 3: Assignment 1C

After choosing and exploring a topic area, the student will articulate 1-3 potential paper topics in question form. The topics suggested should be suitable to meet the assignment requirements (in terms of length, number of sources required, etc.).

  • Performance indicator: The information literate student defines and articulates the need for information.
(ACRL Standard I, Performance Indicator 1)
  • ACRL Outcome: Defines or modifies the information need to achieve a manageable focus.
  • WR 121 Outcome: After choosing and exploring a topic area, the student composes research questions reflecting different perspectives on their topic.

Outcome 4: Assignment 1D

After reading supporting materials describing different types of information sources, the student will be able to distinguish between print, electronic and audiovisual formats, understanding the benefits and drawbacks of each for their individual research project. This understanding will be reflected in their response to assignment #1D, and in the sources they include in their final research project.

  • Performance indicator: The information literate student defines and articulates the need for information.
(ACRL Standard I, Performance Indicator 1)
  • ACRL Outcome: Identifies the value and differences of potential resources in a variety of formats (e.g. multimedia, database, website, data set, audio/visual, book).
  • WR 121 Outcome: The student determines characteristics of information published in different formats.

Outcome 5: Assignment 1D

After reading supporting materials describing different types of information sources, the student will be able to distinguish between sources created for different audiences (i.e. scholarly, popular, primary, etc.) understanding the benefits and drawbacks of each to their individual research project. This understanding will be reflected in their response to Assignment 1D, and in the sources they include in their final research project.

  • Performance indicator: The information literate student identifies a variety of types and formats of potential sources of information.
(ACRL Standard I, Performance indicator 2)
  • ACRL Outcome: Identifies the purpose and audience of potential resources (i.e. schoalrly vs. popular, current vs. historical).
  • WR 121 Outcome: Assesses the value information provided for different audiences, considering their own purpose and the needs of their intended audience.

Outcome 6: Assignment 1D

After identifying a set of potential research questions, and learning about potential information sources, the student will determine which of the research questions is most manageable.

  • Performance indicator: The information literate student identifies a variety of types and formats of potential sources for information.
(ACRL Standard I, Performance indicator 2)
  • ACRL Outcome: Defines or modifies the information need to achieve a manageable focus.
  • WR 121 Outcome: After identifying a set of potential research questions, and learning about potential information sources, the students analyzes the manageability of a research question in a paragraph that considers the availablility of information in different formats and produced for different audiences.

Outcome 7: Assignment 1E

After completing the designated sections of the OSU Library Tutorial, the student will be able to distinguish between information retrieval tools available at the Valley Library, and choose appropriate tools for their individual research project.

  • Performance indicator: The information literate student accesses needed information effectively and efficiently.
(ACRL Standard II, Performance indicator 1)
  • ACRL Outcome: Investigate the scope, content and organization of information retrieval systems.
  • WR 121 Outcome:
    • After completing a short tutorial module, the student identifies a type of information contained in a particular system (books, articles, etc.) by giving an example of an item found using the system.
    • After completing three short tutorial modules, the student distinguishes among indexes, online databases, and collections of online databases, as well as gateways to different databases and collections by answering questions about each type of tool.
    • After completing a short tutorial module, the student selects draws conclusions about the utility of a piece of information found with an online research tool, using the bibliographic information provided by the tool.
    • After completing a short tutorial module, the student identifies some differences between freely available Internet search tools and subscription or fee-based databases by answering different questions about each type of tool.
    • After completing three short tutorial module, the student identifies the relevant parts of a citations displayed in different information retrieval tools.

Outcome 8: Assignment 1G

After exploring the topic area, the student will be able to identify potentially useful search terms, that will retrieve potentially relevant results when used in an information retrieval system.

  • Performance indicator: The information literate student constructs and implements effectively-designed research strategies.
(ACRL Standard II, Performance indicator 2)
  • ACRL Outcome: Identifies keywords, synonyms and related terms for the information needed.
  • WR 121 Outcome: Lists terms that may be useful for locating information on a topic.

Outcome 9: Assignment 1H

After initial investigations into the topic area, the student will be able to integrate the new information found in sources with their previous knowledge about the topic, refining the working thesis accordingly.

  • Performance indicator: The information literate student selects the most appropriate investigative methods or information retrieval systems for accessing the needed information.
(ACRL Standard II, Performance indicator 1)
  • ACRL Outcome: Selects efficient and effective approaches for accessing the information needed from the investigative method or information retrieval system.
  • WR 121 Outcome: Analyzes and interprets the information collected using a growing awareness of key terms and concepts to decide whether to search for additional information or to identify more accurately when the information need has been met.
