Introduction to the Searching Component
Searching is an integral
part of a research process. It is important to learn the mechanics and
logics of research tools, so that information can be retrieved effectively.
In order to locate information, a searcher needs to know the specialties
of certain search tools (e.g. a subject databases).
In addition to the
mechanics, it is important to understand the flow of information--that
is, who creates the information and how it is distributed and eventually
made available. Successful research relies on how accurate and relevant
the information is; therefore, knowing how to evaluate the information
is crucial. In order to maintain academic honosty, proper credit must
be given to information sources. Citation styles established through
professional societies or a specific academic discipline must be followed
carefully.
