Participating planning searching learning & evaluating

Informed Consent Letter

Dear survey participants

This letter is to invite you to participate in a research project that is being conducted by the OSU Libraries and the Technology Access Program at Oregon State University. The research aspect is participating in the evaluation of an online tutorial titled "OSU Libraries Online Tutorial for Computerized Information in Agriculture". This tutorial is designed to help you preplan your research project, and effectively use the research tools (databases etc.) in the science areas. It also proposes the usage of a sequential combination of learning strategies (Concept mapping, mental imagery and storytelling) to evaluate information retrieved.

The tutorial itself may take from 30 minutes to 2 hours to finish, or more to finish, it depends on your learning style. The tutorial evaluation should take about 15-20 minute to finish. You will also be asked to fill out the learning style assessment form (take about 5-10 minutes to finish) after you have finished the tutorial evaluation. The purpose of the evaluation is to find out whether the proposed sequential combination of the learning strategies is an applicable tool in evaluating information. Furthermore, if the suitability of this proposed tool varies with different types of learners (e.g. visual learners, blind learners etc.)

You will not be compensated for participating in this evaluation. By using this tutorial, you may learn effective library research skills without physically attending a class or setting foot on campus. It is available to you 24/7. You will be acquainted with various research tools such as different databases from various companies. You can explore the possibility of using visual, imagery and storytelling as a combined strategy to evaluate information, a set of skills which may become essential in the development of life-long learning skills.

There are no foreseeable risks for completing this evaluation. All that is requested is time to look at the tutorial, complete the evaluation and the learning style assessment form. If you have already completed the online tutorial, the actual time for completing the evaluation and learning style assessment will be around 30-35 minutes (15/20 minutes + 5/10 minutes)

Your participation will contribute a great deal to our research. We thank you in advance for agreeing to help us out. Your participation is absolutely voluntary and you may decline to answer any questions you choose or discontinue the participation at any time.

If you have questions about the evaluation, please contact either May Chau at 541-737-0565 or Ron Stewart at 541-737-7307. If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, please contact the Oregon State University Administrator at IRB@oregonstate.edu or 541-737-3437. Please print out a copy of this page for your future reference.
