Self-service computer workstations located in the Electronic Reference Center of the Learning Commons provide access to a large collection of web-based electronic resources including subject indexes, reference sources, and many full-text publications. Subject specific resources in CD format are also accessible here. Assistance in using these resources is available from staff at the Reference Desk.
Mediated Electronic Reference Service is provided by appointment for access to research databases that are not available on the Web or that predate the resources available in the ERC. For more information or an appointment referral contact the Reference Desk or your subject librarian.

Orbis is a library catalog that combines information from 20 academic libraries into a single unified database. It is an interlibrary service for currently enrolled students, faculty and staff at Orbis member institutions. The online service is easy to use at any time by connecting to the Orbis Union Catalog. Items can usually be picked up at the home library's circulation desk three days after the request is made. All member libraries loan generally circulating books through this service, and some libraries loan other materials as well. The system will let you know if the material is not available through this automated program.
Circulation serves as the service point for Photocopy Services. You may drop-off or pick-up copy requests, or get general help with the photocopiers.
Self-service copiers are located in the Photocopy Center on the 2nd floor, as well as on each floor. Special copiers for creating transparencies and for color copying are in the 2nd floor center only. The copiers will operate with the university ID card or a convenience card, which may be purchased at a vending machine in the telephone lobby or Photocopy Center.
Printing from library computers and networked laptop computers cost $.07/page. OSU students, faculty and staff can add money to their university ID card at convenience card machines located in the Library's main lobby and the Photocopy Center on the main (2nd) floor of the library. All other patrons need to first purchase a convenience card for $1.00 and then add value to it. The money added can also be used for photocopying ($.07/page) and printing from microform readers ($.10/page). Networked laser printers are located on the main (2nd) floor of the library.
The Reference collection, which covers all disciplines, is located adjacent to the Learning Commons on the 2nd floor. Search this collection for encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, bibliographies and more. There are also print versions of many periodical indexes that cover older materials not found in the online periodical indexes.
Commonly used reference items are located immediately behind the Reference Desk in Ready Reference. Included in Ready Reference are tools to help you use the online resources more effectively, such as subject specific thesauri. Ask at the Reference Desk if you need assistance with locating or using any kind of reference resource.
Books, videos, articles, class notes, and exams placed on Reserve by instructors are located at Circulation.

Use electronic indexes or databases to identify published articles. The Electronic Reference Center (2nd floor) allows you to conduct a computerized literature search on a wide range of subjects. The Electronic Reference Center webpage provides an alphabetical list of databases for those who know the name of the database they want and a subject arrangement of databases for those unsure of what electronic resources are appropriate for a given topic.
Print indexes are available to provide access to journal and magazine articles which predate those found in electronic indexes. Ask for help at the Reference Desk to identify and locate the most appropriate indexes for your topic.
Almost all databases available in the Electronic Reference Center can be searched online (information on remote access). Instruction on searching electronic databases is offered on an individual or group basis. For more information, contact 737-8226 or your subject librarian.
Search for the name of the magazine or journal in the online catalog to see if the library owns it (the library does not own all the indexed magazines and journals) and to identify its call number. Use the call number and location code to determine the magazine's or journal's location.
Current issues will be arranged by call number in display areas on the floor for that call number. Older issues will be in the book stacks, compact shelving on the 1st floor (call numbers Q,R,S,T) or in microform located on the 3rd floor. (Check Oasis for locations.)
Use Oasis, the libraries' online catalog, to search for books. Oasis also includes listings of government publications, maps, videos, journals, and other materials in the OSU Libraries. Oasis terminals are located on all floors of the Valley Library. It is also accessible online or through telnet.
Assistance in searching Oasis is available at the Reference Desk (737-7295). A tutorial is available on the Web.
The card catalog located in Reference is a useful finding tool for some of the older materials in the library.
A location and call number are given for each book. Use these to find the book in the library. Call Number Directories provide locations using the first letter of the call number and are posted throughout the library. If you need further assistance, please ask at the Reference Desk.
OSU is now part of the Orbis Consortium, a combined online catalog for many academic libraries in Washington and Oregon. Links from Oasis allow you to duplicate a search in Orbis, and if the item is available at another library it will be delivered within 3 days to The Valley Library Circulation desk, without further notification.
