Head of Guin Library, Oregon State University

Oregon State University Libraries & Press (OSUL&P) invites applications for the position of Head of Guin Library, a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, tenure track faculty position.  The Guin Library is located at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) in Newport, Oregon.

We are looking for an energetic and forward-thinking leader to manage the daily operations of the Guin Library, and to develop new initiatives that will keep the library at the heart of HMSC’s dynamic and rapidly-growing campus.  Strong collaborative skills are essential; HMSC currently hosts research and education programs from seven OSU colleges and six state and federal agencies.  As an active member of the HMSC faculty, the successful candidate will build relationships with OSU faculty, staff and students, and also with state, federal and visiting scientists.  He or she will develop policies and programs to meet the needs of this specialized campus, and as a member of OSUL&P’s leadership team will balance those needs with OSUL&P’s strategic goals and priorities.  OSU plans to significantly expand the HMSC in the future, and this position will have a unique opportunity to shape the development of library services for that initiative.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage the Guin Library (budgeting, facilities management, user services, technical support and planning, supervision of two staff members).
  • Develop new services and integrate new technologies into library systems as user needs evolve.
  • Enhance the visibility of OSUL&P services and expertise by developing strategic partnerships with HMSC programs, students, faculty and staff.
  • Teach in formal and informal settings, to varied audiences.

This is a tenure-track position.  The successful candidate will actively participate in research, contribute to the University’s teaching mission, develop a record of professional service and engage with the campus community.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree or foreign equivalent.
  • At least two years of professional experience in a library, with a demonstrated record of achievement or progressively increasing responsibility.
  • Evidence of effective managerial skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to user-centered service.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in marine studies or related field in the sciences or social sciences.
  • Experience supervising employees, students or volunteers.
  • Experience building partnerships with science faculty around their research and/or teaching.
  • Experience working in a branch library setting.
  • Record of scholarly achievement and research skills.
  • Experience teaching research skills and concepts in upper-division undergraduate and/or graduate student settings.

The salary range for this position is $70,000-$80,000, in addition to a generous vacation and benefits package.

OSU is an AA/EOE and has a policy of being responsive to dual-career needs.
