Marine Resource Management information is multi-disciplinary, produced by a wide variety of people, and often hard to find. This guide provides a starting point for tracking down MRM resources.
| Searching OSU's Catalog | Using Electronic Indexes |
| Using Journals | Identifying Useful Web Resources |
| Doing the "Right Thing" with Information | Getting Help |
Journals and books pertinent to MRM are housed in both the Valley (main campus in Corvallis) and Guin (Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport) Libraries of OSU. To locate books, technical reports and journal titles available at Oregon State University, try searching OSU's catalog, OASIS.
Search OASIS for books, journal titles, conference proceedings, government documents and reports. You can search by author, title, or subject by either browsing or using keywords. You can also check for the call number, location (Valley and/or HMSC) and availability of materials. If you choose to browse by subject, experiment with subject headings such as these.
| Coastal ecology | Marine resources |
| Marine pollution | Waste disposal in the ocean |
| Coastal zone management | Fishery management |
| Ecotourism | Shore protection |
To locate journal articles and other reports, use one of the indexes available in the Valley Library's Research Gateway (access limited to OSU students. faculty and staff). You'll have to use several indexes to cover most MRM topics. Many of these cover the world's literature, so include items not written in English, and not readily available. Most items can be obtained through inter-library loan if not owned by OSU.
Once you find the citation to an article, you need to find the journal. Check OASIS first. Journals have restricted circulation which means you should plan to read or photocopy them in the Libraries. Bound journals circulate for 24 hours to graduate students and faculty. Unbound issues do not circulate. Some journals are now available electronically.
You also might want to subscribe to our table of contents service, Ingenta. You can request up the table of contents of up to 50 journals and run 25 subject searches on a regular basis.

You at least need to know about copyright. It effects you as you are creators of copyrightable work and well as users.

Citing Information
All disciplines have their own idiosyncratic way of citing information. There is even great variety among journals. Check with your professor as to his or hers preferred style. You may want to consider purchasing a bibliographic software, such as ProCite, Papyrus or EndNote, that will help you manage citations.
It's easy to cut and paste out of someone else's electronic document. Don't do it unless you correctly cite the source and give credit to the creator of the original idea.
