Grading the ILP in the Blackboard Grade Center

This will show how to assign grades to ILP questions using the Blackboard grade center.

Access the Grade Center through the Control Panel.

When a student has submitted work, you will see a little green exclamation point in the grade center indicating that there is work to be graded.

Clicking in the cell for the assignment will open up a textbox.  You can manually enter a score by clicking on the cell.

Note:  you do not need to see the green icon to click in the cell - in the image above, you could open a box for ILP #1 by clicking on the icon, or for ILP #2 or #3 by clicking on the little hyphen in the (otherwise empty) boxes.

If there is a green icon, then the student has submitted work on Blackboard.   To review that work and grade within blackboard, click the little button (with down arrows) on the right side of the cell to open up more options:

Click Grade Details.  That will bring you to this page, which will show all of the activity on the assignment.  To see what the student has submitted, you will want to click the button labeled View Attempt.

Note:  Sometimes students submit more than one attempt.  This can be on purpose (they changed topics) or by accident.  Check all of the attempts to make sure you find the student's real answers.  You can clear the extra attempts later.  If the real attempt is not the most recent, you will have to clear the later attempts to get the grade to display properly.

When you view the attempt, you can see the student's answers in the middle of the page, next to the heading Given Answer.  In the example below, the given answer reads:

Keyword #1 is important because blah blah.  Keyword #2 is important because blah blah.  Keyword #3 is important because blah blah.

You can leave feedback for the student in the Feedback box.  This is the area shaded in green in the image below.  You must enter a numeric score for the student in the box at the top right of the screen.

Note: The example below shows a short question, where everything displays on one screen.  When the question and/or answer is long, entering the numeric score requires scrolling back up, which is clunky.  Be careful not to put the score for the question you're reading in the box for the next question.

Underneath the given answer you will see a heading Correct Answer with the response [None].  That is there for questions with standard answers that have been loaded into Blackboard in advance.  None of the ILP questions meet that description, but the system displays the heading anyway.  Ignore it.

When you're done, click the Submit button at the bottom of the screen.

This will bring you back to the Grade Details page.  Now, there should be a score displaying for the student - see the green shaded area below.

To move to the next student, you can do one of two things.  Click the arrow next to the User box at the top right corner - shaded in pink in the image above.  This will bring you to the next student's work on ILP #1.

You can also jump back to the Grade Center page by clicking on the Grade Center link in the breadcrumbs at the top of the page.
