Neil R. Davison, Associate Professor in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film, received $2,000 for travel to Dublin, Ireland to conduct research at the Irish National Library and the Dublin City Library Center on the connections between James Joyce and the Altman family, and the influence of Jewish acquaintances on Joyce’s work.
Karen E. Holmberg, Associate Professor and Director of the MFA Creative Writing program in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film, received $1,825 for travel to Newark, Delaware and Oyster Bay, New York to conduct research at the University of Delaware Library on the poet, bookmaker, and collagist John Digby and to interview him.
Richard A. Settersten, Jr., Professor of Human Development and Family Services, and Endowed Director in the College of Public Health and Human Services’ Hallie Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families, received $2,000 for travel to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the University of California-Berkeley to conduct research on human development at the turn of the twentieth century in relation to the studies that informed the book Children of the Great Depression.

Meghan Freeman, Assistant Professor within the School of Writing, Literature, and Film, received $2000 for travel to the National Gallery in London to gather information that will contribute to the completion of her manuscript To Have and Behold: The Aesthetic Encounter in Victorian Literature.
Robin Rose, Professor within the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management, received $2000 for travel to the National Archives in Washington, DC/College Park, MD. Professor Rose will be research early forest photography that will contribute to his forest regeneration course (FOR442) and an Honors course in Forest History.
2011-2012 recipients – 2nd round
Hua-yu Li, Associate Professor within the School of Public Policy, received $2000 for travel to the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History in Moscow for research relating to her book on the Stalinist influence on the CCP.
Rebecca Olson, Assistant Professor within the School of Writing, Literature and Film, received $2000 to travel to the University of Oxford’s Bodleian Library. She will be conducting research for her article “The Literary Text as Historical Context: Caxton’s Blanchardin and Early Tudor Ceremony.”
Nancy Froehlich, Assistant Professor and Andrea Marks, Associate Professor within the School of Design in the Human Environment, received $1000 for travel to the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles and the poster collection at the Oakland Museum in California. Their research will result in a catalogue, exhibition, website, and forum on Occupy: Visualizing a Grass Roots Movement.
Kirsi Peltomaki, Associate Professor within the School of Arts and Communication received $1000 to travel to the personal archives of contemporary artist Michael Asher in Los Angeles, California. Her work will be published by the MIT Press as part of their Writing Art series.
2010-2011 Recipients — 2nd round
Susan Meyers, Assistant Professor and Director of Writing within
the School of Writing, Literature, and Film, received $2000 for travel
to Mexico City to trace the full history of Mexico’s centralized
textbook production. Professor Meyers will be visiting CONALITEG (Centro
Nacional de Libros y Textos Gratuitos or National Center for Free
Textbooks) to gather information that will contribute to the completion
of her manuscript Del Otro Lado: Constructions of Literacy in Rural Mexico and the Effects of Transnational Migration.
Kara Ritzheimer, Assistant Professor, History Department, received $1500 for research that will support her book Battling Buffalo Bill: Anti-“Trash” Activism and Censorship Policy in Early 20 th Century Germany.
Professor Ritzheimer will be traveling to view the collections at the
Hauptstaatsarchiv in Dresden, Germany and the Staatsarchiv in Leipzig,
Nabil Boudraa, Associate Professor, School of Foreign Languages
and Literatures received $1250 to travel to Grenoble, France to conduct
research within the new Kateb Yacine collection housed in the
Bibliotheque Municipale Internationale. This research will contribute to
his article in a special issue of Expressions Maghrebines.
David Baldridge, Associate Professor, College of Business
received $1000 toward travel to Rochester, NY to investigate the
collections at the Rochester Institute of Technology/National Technical
Institute for the Deaf.

Sebastian Heiduschke, Foreign Language and Literature Program
within the School of Language, Culture, and Society, received $1250 to
view the collections of the Wendemuseum in Los Angeles, CA for chapter seven of his book “Boring to Booming: Fan Cultures of East Germany’s DEFA Cinema.”
Richmond Barbour, Department of English, received $1000 for
research performed at the British Library in support of his new book
“The Trades Increase: The Sixth Voyage of the London East India
Jun Xing, Ethnic Studies Program within the School of Language,
Culture, and Society received $2000 toward travel to Singapore to visit
the Asian Film Archives to review the original print and video
collections of Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Singaporean and Japanese
independent films for a tentatively titled book “Chopstick Identities:
Ethnicity, Cultural, and Collective Memory in Asian and Asian American

British Library in London to examine appropriate manuscripts in her
study of the important role that tapestries played in early modern
Tara Williams, Department of English, will use her $1500 grant to
complete research at the Modern Language Association archive in support
of her research on the value of the History of the English Language
Susan Shaw, Women’s Studies, received $1500 toward travel to
Nashville, Tennessee, to consult with Vanderbilt University’s
theological library bibliographer and librarian as she completes
research on her next book project, They Didn’t Teach Me That in Sunday School: Women and Reflective Faith; the book seeks to address a gap in accessible scholarship about women in Christianity.
