This space is used to announce updates to the Oregon State University Archives and Records Management Web page, to introduce new exhibits, to publicize events of interest to archivists and university records managers, and to explain the happenings in the Archives. The following announcements highlight significant additions, changes and events that occurred in 2000.

October 2000 Announcements

University Archives becomes part of University Libraries

On September 1, 2000, the Oregon State University Archives became a department of the University Libraries. The Archives was established in 1961 as a component of the Library, but in the late 1960s, the University Archives and Records Management Program was transferred to the University's central administration. The Archives will remain in its current location in the Kerr Administration Building. The OSU Archives staff is looking forward to many opportunities for cooperation and collaboration with new colleagues in the University Libraries.

University Archives on OASIS

Information about the University Archives holdings is now available through the University Libraries' online catalog, OASIS. These summary catalog records describe Archives materials at the collection level and include links to the complete finding aid on the Archives' World Wide Web site.

Only a few collections are now available on OASIS, but more records will be added regularly, with the long-term goal of having records for all of the Archives collections available through OASIS. Searches can be limited to the Archives' catalog records by choosing the Keyword Search option. Click on the "View Entire Collection" box and, from that menu, choose "Archives."

The Archives' catalog records are also available through the Orbis Union Catalog, the unified library catalog of 18 universities and colleges in the Pacific Northwest, and OCLC (the Online Computer Library Center, Inc.), the international computer library network.

New Accessions in the University Archives

A 1917-1918 minute book from Kappa Kappa Kappa, a short-lived sorority on campus, is now available in the Memorabilia Collection. The Esther Mears Collection consists of student memorabilia from her days at OSC and elementary and high school report cards. The James Callaway Papers were recently accessioned into the Archives. This accession consists of two scrapbooks and a service album for company member autographs from Callaway's military training at Fort Lewis. The George H. Arscott Papers, acquired recently, include articles and publications. This accession consists of articles, article abstracts, conference papers, reports, and OSU Agricultural Experiment Station and Extension Service publications stemming from Arscott's research in poultry science. Also included in these records is a complete list of Arscott's published materials.

Additions to Collections in the University Archives

Alumni Relations (RG 35) recently transferred subject files compiled for research purposes by the staff of the Oregon Stater. Types of materials included are: photographs, newspaper clippings, magazines, minutes, correspondence and two LP record albums.
