
Waldo Hall, 1907. Constructed as
a women's dormitory, the building had 115 student rooms plus a kitchen,
dining room, parlors, and the teaching laboratories for the Domestic Science
department. It continued to be used as a dormitory until 1966. Photo by

Memorial Union, ca. 1927. The Memorial
Union site was dedicated on March 21, 1926; ground was broken in June, 1927;
the building was opened for use at Homecoming, November 17, 1928; and it
was formally dedicated on June 1, 1929 "in memory of the heroic dead
who gave their lives in their country's wars." [Harriet's Collection

Mechanical Hall Annex Construction, 1894.
Workers complete the three-story frame annex to Mechanical Hall. The original
two-story brick section of the building and the water tower on the left
were constructed in 1889. The building housed the armory, printing office,
wood and iron working departments, gymnasium, and recitation rooms. It was
destroyed by fire in September 1898. [MSS-Bloss Collection]

Shepard Hall, 1908. Funded entirely
by students, alumni, faculty, and friends of Oregon Agricultural College,
Shepard Hall was constructed by the Young Men's and Women's Christian Associations
(YMCA/YWCA) to provide facilities for student organizations. It was named
for Clay Shepard, a 1904 OAC graduate, who first proposed such a building
and raised most of the necessary funds before he died in 1906. In 1940,
the State Board of Higher Education purchased the building and renovated
it for the Speech Department. [P90:59]

Men's Dormitory, 1928. (Weatherford Hall)
Ground was broken for the building on March 20th. In spite of a month of
incessant rain as the foundation was being laid, L.N. Traver, Corvallis
contractor, completed the building in exactly six months. Weatherford Hall
served as a student resident hall until 1994 when it was closed for repairs.

Men's Gymnasium, 1913. (Langton Hall) Excavation
for the basement of thegymnasium which included a 50x100-foot swimming pool
was done with horses during the summer of 1913. [P90:127]

Administrative Services Building, 1970. (Kerr
Administration Building) A 30-inch concrete base slab is about to poured
for the basement. The basement for the 6-story tower is to the right and
for the 2-story unit to the left. Later in construction, the two basements
were connected by a corrider. [P82:523]

Memorial Union, 1936. Seven years
after the Memorial Union was dedicated, permanent walks of cement and clay
tile were layed and shrubbery planted through the help of PWA (Public Works
Administration) projects. Board walks had been used in this area and lawn
had been growing on the terrace since the building had been completed. [#34]
